LCD shopping... 17" or 19"? Make/model?

I'm getting close to making the switch from CRT to LCD. The main reason being the need to relieve my eyes from the typical strain that CRT's produce over time... I think going LCD is a change they'll appreciate. My current monitor is 17", and ive read that LCD's are measured by actual viewing size, so a 17" would effectively be larger than a 17" CRT, which is nice... I'm not opposed to going to 19" either, but im not sure if the added expense is going to be worth it.

I'll be using the new monitor primarily for "everyday" type of tasks like internet, school, movies and gaming, with even distribution among each. Good gaming performance, though, is something id want.

Which makes and models should i be looking at? My budget is around $500 CDN, the more future proof the make/model the better.

Thanks for any help.

check out the dell 20.1 inch widescreen, if you look hard or buy used you should be able to find it for around $500 Can.

I got a AG Neovo F-419 19" 12ms LCD monitor from Newegg.com for $269.99. There's a $50 rebate to mail in too. Don't know if it's still on the site, but my monitor has been working fine so far.

Honestly I have both 19 inch and 17 inch LCDs on my desk close to eachother, and I can't really tell a difference between them as they are both the same resolution. I think I even prefer the 17" for its finer dot pitch. if I were you I'd be choosing between 17" LCD or 20" Dell LCD

Some people don't like 1600x1200 res though. Not me...I can't live without it

For the price of a 21" crt, I would buy 2 LCDs or 2 CRTs....I can't decide aroiuga;sldjg;

I'm gonna wait out the death of this 19" crt and wish it'll take me into new years, so for now, I envy you.

I'll probably end up settling for a 17 incher. It's a size that should work well in my workspace, and not be too much of an overwhemling adjustment either. 20" is a tad bit out of my price range (not looking for used, either ).

Any other suggestions for makes and models? I've long read good things about what Samsung, Viewsonic and NEC have to offer... I hadn't heard of AG Neovo until now, ill go do some reading up on them in the meantime.

Did some searching, came up with these as potential cadidates:

Samsung SyncMaster 173P+
NEC LCD1770GX
Viewsonic VX724
Viewsonic VP171B

All are 8ms or lower, and seem to have recieved good reviews. any others to consider? Comments on listed ones?

I'll vouch for samsung panels. I purchased my first (a 17" 760V TFT) about 4 years ago and it is working like new still. Not a single stuck/dead pixel yet. My main rig also has 2 19" Samsung LCD's for the display (913v) and again, I've had these for close to 1 year now, and not a single problem/dead or stuck pixel on either monitor. Image quality is good, my panels are slower response time ones though so games tend to ghost ever so slightly, but I only notice it if I'm distinctly looking for it.

Samsung, Viewsonic and Sonic are the best manufacturers out there!

Don't get any generic brand names! say GMC, Emprex, and so on.

I got the 17" yesterday, and so far it's been good. Haven't gamed much or anything yet, but for watching TV eps it's fine, viewing angle is quite good (colour can go slightly at fairly extreme angles, but the picture is still very viewable), and for the price, IMO, it seems pretty sweet. I'm almost tempted to get a second one.

My friend's got a Samsung 17" and he's happy with it. No ghosting apparently that he could notice.
