LCD vs. CRT

Can any generalizations be made about reading text on a crt vs. an lcd? Is it easier on the eyes on an lcd, or is it easier on a crt (as long as its sharp w/good refresh rate etc.)? (or it totally depends on hardware and generalization can't be made.)

Reason I'm asking is I've got a couple 19" crt's and use them primarily for reading text and numbers all day, and would be interested in replacing them with lcd's, but only if they might reduce eye strain and increase the clarity. (currently my crt's are at 1600x1200@75hz)

For text I would take an LCD hands down. For games, I'd rather have a good CRT. Why not have both and be happy?

I personally say LCD hands down for both situtations.

My Dell 2005fp blows my 21" Sony e540 away.

In games, movies, and text.

I think i fogot to mention it's WS.

Sounds like I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for the next dell coupon bonanza like the one that went on last month...which I believe you know of very well. I'm going to watch deals for the dell 2001fp, as my eyes haven't been doing so well lately.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

As much as I disklike LCD technology in general, I'd still have to recommend it for reading text only. I would only recommend to business/office users and people like yourself that only need a screen to read text and don't want to deal with "emissions" .

IMO, sacrificing picture quality just to save space/power/eyestrain is not even worth it. I mean, think about it, the most important quality IS the picture. After all, it IS what you will be looking at!

I'd go LCD for office work. Saves space too. CRT's are only for those picky picky indiciduals or those who can't afford a nice LCD.

I love my 2005fp, and keep your eyes open for the deals.. I'll shoot ya a PM if I see one..

Even so, the 2005fp for $500 is a worthy upgrade.

Meh, sometimes i just don't know..

I have had nice ViewSonic and Sony CRT's hooked p next to this monitor and I REALLY like my LCD.

I don't know too many people that would pick a HIGH end CRT (19-21") over a high end LCD. Granted there are some beautiful CRT's, LCD for the most part is caught up. I have plenty of deskspace and would not go back to a CRT, regaurdless of the model.

I personally think the 2005/Apple Cinema display look just as good, with other benefits as well ( over a CRT )

That's just me though.

LCDs are far easier on the eyes for text.

Easily the better alternative in this case.

You forgot to mention it consume less power, costs a lot more, gives off less heat and is better for the environment as it consume less electricity.
If I could get it for as much as crt, I'd would but its the cost that is keeping me from doing so. I would want 19' to 21' thought
not 15-17', that's too small. imho.asdf

LCD.

My parents bought a crapass 15" LCD, and I bought the best 17" CRT, and I think its still the best (what other monitor gives you 1024x768 @ 120Hz). I love the small dot pitch on my monitor and I noticed how its so much clearer than any of my old CRTs. Yet, it still lost to the LCD by a lot.

I bought Dell 2005FPW for $366 including taxes. So much for that theory.

Please do. I'm sometimes on top of the hotdeals but often not because I find that I usually save more money by avoiding the board altogether.

With the 2005fpw's only doing 1680x1050, I need 2x20" lcd's to cover a 3200x1200 desktop (not much more desktop space than 2x2005's, but considerably less physical space, which is good).

lcds are at the point where crts aren't worth the investment any more, esp since crts fade after just a short few years(around 3) into horrible ugliness. lcds last, and use much less power to boot. crts have a slight edge in gaming still, very slight. but new 8ms lcds are so close the other advantages just push them over the top. no reason to buy crt.

I had to voice my thoughts, first LCD's are great and getting better. The common complaints about ghosting, frame rates, etc are really no longer an issue with a good LCD. Text looks good and the whole thing is easy on the eyes. Second, they are light and take up less real estate. I think that is reason enough to toss out a 75lb. 19" monitor. Thirdly, they last longer than CRT's. Yeah, sure some are super high priced, but get a decent one and it will last a lot longer than a CRT.
