I bought a brand new lcd monitor, the Planar 19", with the dell deal from a few days ago, and I need some help getting it to work properly. This monitor has a responce time of 25ms, which I hear is fine for games, but I have terrible shaddowing. Even simple motion can have shaddowing. This clearly isnt running as it should. I have resolution set to what is native for the lcd. I have tried running different refresh rates, and now I am at 60, which seems to be the best. Other resoltuions dont change the problem. I have a geforce2 pro, but have also tested this on my laptop and a voodoo3, so video card isnt the issue. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks
Garrett

I would send it back. Most of the 19" LCDs are manufactured pretty well, so you might have just gotten a bad one. They should have no problem with sending you a new one.

I agree, my LCD from Dell works just fine at non-native resolutions. You should at least call the support staff to see if they have any ideas but it sounds like you may have a lemon.

i believe the planar uses different technology than most other LCDs.

i forgot, but i heard while the response time might be 'good' on paper, but actually, it sucks for gaming and has ghosting affects.

that's why i didn't buy planar 17" from dell some time ago.

might have changed.. but that's what i know

good luck

I sent back a Planar PV 174 because the ghosting was intolerable. The Planar I purchased used MVA technology which in my opinion has inferior color reproduction and worse ghosting. It has nothing to do with your display being defective.

In my experience many companies can't be trusted to give you an accurate response speed. So 25 ms does not always mean "better".

The ghosting on my NEC 1850X is minimal and it has a rise/fall response time of 29 ms. Go figure.

Frankly I think that Planar gets too good of a reputation, I am not at all impressed with their products (at least for gaming)... maybe they are good if you just mostly web surf.

Well, I dont know what is going on but their is still terrible ghosting in games. I bought a radeon 7500 with dvi out, to see if the problem was in the analog to digital converting, but the ghosting is still as bad. I have tried both my lcd planar 19" lcds. I think Im going to return them, unless anyone has any other ideas?

Thanks

No LCD manufacturered to date can compare to traditional CRT screens in response time. That is why you see ghosting and shadowing in games/movies. The pixels can't update fast enough on/off, and everything will look blured. 25ms is still very slow compared to CRT response time. You could always wait for the ThinCRT screens to arrive. But that may be awhile yet. Or I'd suggest just getting a regular monitor if you game or watch movies.

I get excellent gaming and movie performance from my LCD screen... I think that there are many of them out there that do poorly but have inflated specs which make all LCD's look bad.

I agree. I went down to my local computer store and tested out a KDS Rad 5. I had never really looked at gaming on lcds before but we get there and installed a copy of Quake III. After testing it for a while I saw absolutely no ghosting at all. The funny thing is its my understanding that the Rad 5 has a 35ms response time.

I think lcds are getting alot better. The best way to find out if one works for you is go look at it. I know its not always easy to find shops that have them setup for you to try out but thats the only way you will know if it will work for you.

If you do return it check out the Samsung models. From all I have read they are simply amazing in gaming, dvd, and regular viewing.

I personally am going with a Samsung 151s soon and replacing my 19" with it. (Need transportable and more space). And my main home use will be gaming.

I have a GEMSTAR GL- 821A which I got from newegg.com. It is rated at a 25ms response time (but as someone previously mentioned, every manufacturer seems to measure that differently, it doesn't mean much). Anyway it is good for games. I haven't seen any ghosting at all during normal FPS play. If I combine a rocket jump with a 180 degree spin turn, I MIGHT be able to see a slight ghosting affect. Not enough to matter though, and it might be my imagination.

So I think some LCDs have come a long way and are totally acceptable for gaming and DVDs. CRTs are still cheaper and capable of displaying higher resolutions (the Gemstar has a max res of 1280x1024), but LCDs have some advantages too.
