LCDs any good for gaming?

are they horrible for games or what? ive heard the arguement go both ways...what do you guys think?


are CRT's way better for gaming, or are LCD's worth a shot

It really depends on your acceptable level of quality. LCDs are getting significantly better, but they still suffer from several problems.
1) Often your game cannot be played at the exact same resolution as your LCD. For example your LCD is 1024 x 768 and you can only get good frame rates at 800 x 600 or maybe the game doesn't allow the resolution to be adjusted. Thus you must run at a non-native resolution. This is ok in some games but horrible in others. Text quality is really, really bad at non-native resolution so some games will look horible if text is an important part. But also all the graphics will be shrunk or expanded making visible defects which may or may not be important to you. It is up to you if you can live with this or not.
2) LCDs still have a slight motion blur. While it can look good in some games, in others the quality might not be up to your standards.
3) Brightness still lags behind CRTs. This may or may not affect you.
4) I like to really emerse myself in the game. This takes a large screen and good sound system. Dollar for dollar LCDs are much smaller. I just cannot get the same feel on a smaller screen.

I'd generally say LCDs are acceptable for most 3D motion games (like Quake) but unacceptable for most 2D games when you are at non-standard resolution (like Civilization) since you notice image quality a lot more in 2D games.

I second the resolution issue. We've had them here and through the tests I ran them through there always seems to be an issue where using a non-native resolution just didn't look very well at all. I guess I'd look at what you plan on doing. If everything can comply with the native resolution to the LCD then go for it. Otherwise save yourself some money, use some extra space and get a CRT

One thing that wasn't mentioned is if you go to a lot of lan parties, or just need to transport your computer a lot. It's a lot easier to carry around a 10 pound lcd than a 40 pound crt

i dont understand the resolution thing....but will everquest, serious sam, counterstrike, and giants: citizen kabuto work on an LCD? those are the kinds of games i play...


everquest, having a lot of text, seems to fit the bill of the type of game which would look bad.....am i right or wrong?
