LCD's college gamer

Im about to go to college and desk space is a premium. I bought a 19" crt but i think its gonna be too large. I am a fairly heavy gamer (quake 3 Unreal, Tribes, mainly FPS games). Everyone says thatLCDS are incredibly bad for gaming, but there has to be some out there that can keep up with the speed of FPS games. I heard that the silicon graphics 1600W is good. Does anyone have any suggestions for LCD displays 17" or larger that are acceptable for FPS gaming?

I'm not sure about any other besides the SGI 1600, but I'm thinking about the Samsung 170MP, which also has a built-in TV-tuner (so I can get rid fo the need for a TV), since I'm off to college in September as well

From what I hear there are some new technologies on the brink. It might actually be wise to hold off for a year, that is unless that is some amazing monitor out there.

I just went through the Samsung 170T DVI LCD Monitor and it ran pretty good with FPS but only if you have a GeForce 3 (Geforce 2 was awful). The motion blur is hardly noticable in single player but slightly noticable in Online Gameplay (Rocket Arena). I'm using the Sony N80 DVI right now and FPS games run flawless, including Online (Rocket Arena)! You should check out the Sony N80 if you want to play FPS without motion blur, but make sure you run it with a Geforce 3.

I would be running it with a Geforce 3 for sure, however it would most likely be an analog connector.

Don't run an LCD on an analog connector. All it does is introduce more steps into getting the video on the screen, and it can suffer quality wise.

Video card (Digital Data) -> VGA plug (Analog) -> LCD (Back to digital)

Do yourself a favor and get a DVI video card and monitor if your going LCD.

Dunno but the M81 looks pretty hot. I think the Samsung 170T has better image quality though. Not sure how it runs on Games since I only saw it at CompUSA.

I just graduated from college, and I kept my 19 inch CRT there in the dorm with me and loved every minute of its flatscreen goodliness. My roomates and I didn't get a TV and just used a TV card and a VCR connected through the PC. We interfaced it with the stereo, used it for winamp visualizations at parties. Got a hell of a lot of use out of it.. Oh yeah, and I did some homework on it too. Anyway, if you are a hardcore gamer, think twice about ditching the CRT for an LCD. I have only seen a few, but those I have seen don't cut the mustard.
