LCDs for games? Sony vs KDS

I'm going to be living in a dorm room in a few months and my 21" wont do... I'm looking for an LCD..

currently I'm looking at the Sony 17" SDM-S71, and KDS 19" Rad-9

Sony 17":
350:1 contrast, 140 degree hor, 120 deg vertical angels..
25ms response time (5ms rise, 20ms fall)

KDS 19":
500:1 contrast, 85 degree all angles
35ms response time (??)

I know that LCDs are not good for games, but I need one to do work on and some light gaming (cs, etc)
I also know the lower repsonse time = better frames..

but does anyone have any suggestions on these? Will the KDS be noticibly worse for gaming? (Prices do not matter for these)

thanks

defau1t, this may appear biased, but since you mention that price does not matter, I would personally go for the Sony LCD, as I would not touch a KDS monitor unless you paid me quite a bit of cash!

the Sony would probably be much better than dthe KDS. It might also be noted that KDS filed for bankrupcy a while back.

Take a look at Samsung's new 1x1T/P series:

171P:
17"
500:1
250 cd
0.264 mm

181T:
18"
450:1
250 cd
0.281 mm

191T:
19"
500:1
250 cd
0.294 mm

all have dvi input and are 25ms.

thanks, ill take a look at those

only reason i'm looking at those two is because i can get somewhat of a deal, but anything will do at this point..

so i guess the KDS is out... sony < samsung?

i know samsung is good for all the extras (tv or whatnot on thier lcd's) but i'm just looking for a great lcd itself

--

edit: nevermind, i looked them up and they aren't the multifunctional lcd's...

but my original samsung > sony question still exists

Don't get the Sony, or atleast not the SDM series. I've heard bad things about them at tomshardware.com as well as cnet reviews while the KDS RAD series has gotten excellent reviews, not only for their value, but also for performance. I suggest u do a bit of research, because if you guys are basing it on just brand name, you'll miss out on excellent stuff. Just like to add of the alarming number of defective Sony units noted by many Cnet reviews.

"I know that LCDs are not good for games, "

Actually, I don't think this is true anymore. If you get a LCD with a decent refresh rate (less than or equal to 25ms) it works really well with gaming. Some tournament level FPS player who is used to rocket jumping while performing 360 degree turns and sniping 4 people in the head before he hits the ground might beg to differ, but I am a pretty competitive FPS player and haven't had any problems while using my wife's LCD monitor.

Response is very important for games. A 20ms response time = a max 50 fps. Just divide 1000/response time to get your fps number. I hear that Visiontek will be coming out with 16ms response time Flat Panels. But 20ms is really good for now. I think the Samsung 19" flat panels are pretty reasonable in price and they tend to have competitve response times (I don't know the actual spec), and it's a very nice thin unit with a very thin frame. They look like one of those Eizo models that some businesses are buying for multi-panel displays.

Yea, the new samsungs look great, "<25ms" response times, compared to KDS's 35ms...

Any complaints about these samsungs?

for 15", my complaint about Samsung is the price, very close to Eizo, although the spec on paper is better, need to see the real thing first.

I wouldn't rule out KDS. I have two Rad-5 LCDs and I love them! They work great in Quake 3 Arena and other FPS games. Of course, the Rad-5 has a 25ms response time and, according to the KDS website, the Rad-9 has a 35ms response time. See http://www.kdsusa.com/product_detail.asp?prod=77&sub=p. You still should get 28.5 FPS, though, which is serviceable though not as good as the 40 FPS you get with a 25ms monitor. Plus, I have found KDS customer service to be GREAT! (and no, I don't work for them or anything) I bought one of the LCDs on eBay and the bum seller sent me a defective unit (he later admitted that he had seen the LCD fail to boot up). KDS sent me what appears to be a brand new unit right away. There were no dead pixels in any of the KDS LCDs I have used either.

You may want to look at the LCD reviews at BonesReview and see what they have to say too.

Can I ask where you saw that the Rad-5 had a 25ms response time?

I am actually looking for a 15" lcd at the moment and a friend of mine reccomended the Rad-5 for its excellent gaming. Just did not see any info stating it was actually 25ms.

Bump for reply. As it is am leaning towards the Samsung 151s as I know it has 25ms or < response time and supposedly from those who have seen it looks better than the Rad 5. The Rad 5 is quite a bit cheaper though and I am limited on funds.

Get the SamSung 151S LCD (black is nice..) - MUCH better than the KDS rad5 iMHO and not all that much more.

I am very happy with the samsung 151s - great viewing angle and the least amount of ghosting i've seen on an LCD (visited bestbuy/officemax/officedepot/staples/costco and checked a good variety of LCDs..)
