Not to get too corny -- well, ok, getting more than a bit corny -- but the longer I exist on this earth the more I realize that the one true wealth I possess is my circle of friends.

True wealth is not measured in money or status or power. It is measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire.

I will always remember his last words on here about retirement. I'm pushing hard for that goal now.

same here, i want to be out by 50 at the latest.

a doctor told me in my 20s that statistically i'm likely to have a shorter than average life, and that has haunted me ever since.

i knew a guy IRL who waited to do many thing until he was retired

found out he had cancer a couple months after his last day of work, and was gone about 6 months after that

I recall being told how dumb/irresponsible it was to do all the major skiing adventures I did in my early/mid 20's and that I would have plenty of time to do it "later" when I was more financially secure.

In some ways the nay-sayers were correct in that I'd have a LOT more savings now if I'd skipped those trips HOWEVER if I had not gone on them then it would have been impossible to ever go on most due to physical limitations alone.

I can keep working and make money when I'm too old to do nothing but sit at a desk anyway ... some things you HAVE to do when young in order to get it right.

I went skydiving for the first time and the guy that was strapped to my back was a software engineer until his 30's and just said fuck it one day and decided to devote his life to sky diving and became an instructor. Now he lives in an RV with his dog in the desert and spends his days jumping out of planes.

Long term update: In the last three weeks I've gone from dream retirement plans to strongly considering assisted care. Good news is they've decided aches and pains now fall under cancer palliative cancer and have no problems getting the good drugs. I'm pretty pissed off about missing retirement.
Free advice, you can make all the best plans wake up and see it disappear. If you can do so, retire now!
I retired at 53, 4 months before this post. I was just thinking about him, and his sage advice. Which in some cultures means he isn't truly gone. Or at the very least, that he gets to return for a time.

He gave excellent advice. I have always chosen time over money. It has served me well my entire adult life. Whatever becomes of us after death we can't know. I do know people like him are not forgotten quickly. That counts for something I think. For he was no wretch.

Party on eternally Magnus.
