A lot of venues disallow live performances for many reasons. Sometimes the artists have no choice.

Not at all. It's quite common actually. When I worked in production, often they wanted controlled events. One reason is they didn't want artists to change lyrics around, mess up instrumental parts and otherwise perform poorly because it would dissatisfy customers and stir up trouble with labels. Sometimes these performances sound convincingly live because they pre-recorded the tracks prior to the actual live show.

Nirvana "played" some some shitty show like this. They had "Smells Like Teen Spirit" playing in the background and the band was supposed to play along with it. Cobain sung it in a goofy ass deep voice and strummed the guitar completely wrong, it was painfully obvious the band wasn't actually playing live. This band should've done that, lol.
