Does the Asus TV880 works with virtualdub or virtualdvr? If not, can the PowerVCR app work with the divx codec and audio codecs like mp3? Also, is the max resolution 640x480 or can you go higher?

Thanks!

Also if I copy a 2 hour VCR tape to my HD to burn to a CD, does it take 2 hours? If so, can I use my computer in the mean time, or is it best to find something else to do? Is it really easy to do?

Thanks corinthos for the deal.
You will probably have no trouble doing other things while your computer creates digital files from your VCR tapes. I haven't done it yet but my own computer creates MP3s from audio with little CPU utilization. It would depend a lot on your CPU. You can see what your utilization is, or just try doing other things. I'm not afraid to do lots of things at once. I was when I was using my Creative CD-RW drive because I'd get coasters if I just looked at the box while burning...

I would want 2 things out of this, and I am wondering if they can be done out of the box. If they can't , what other software would I need?

1) the ability to capture tv programs into reasonable quality and small size, like divx. The divx video I've seen is about 700 megs for 2 hours of video. How could I go about doing this?

2) some sort of TIVO like functionality, that I could program to record while I am not there

Newer brooktree/conexant chips, and I believe the 10-bit chip mentioned, arent yet supported by Dscaler. Go to www.dscaler.com and check the card compatibility list. Further, the developers were talking about supporting it "very soon" about six months ago. Not a good sign...either its around the corner or theres a problem.

On CPU utilization, you cant compare mp3 operations to video operations. The reality is anything less then a pentium 4 will capture video at cable-tv resolutions and quality, and drop a few frames in the process. You will capture raw input and then leave your machine crunching video for about 12-18+ hours to get it into mpeg4 or equivalent useful format. Go have a nice look at a Pinnacle product box, they actually give you a matrix of processor speed vs capture quality. None of the other vendors (that I've noted) do this, mostly because you wouldnt buy the product if you knew how weak a capture your puny old PC could make.

One last thing to consider is whether the product in question "honors" Macrovision, this piracy protection on many vhs and dvd products. For example the ATI all-in-wonder and tv-wonder products honor macrovision and will NOT copy tapes/dvd's. Other products dont pay attention to it.

The bottom line is any capture card under $120 probably doesnt have hardware mpeg encoding, which means if you dont have a 1.6-1.8GHz system, you're going to capture weak video. If you're ready to stand up and say that your 750MHz system captures very nice video for you, go ahead. Your standards are low.

Just ordered one to replace my IO Magic PCTVR, hopefully I won't be disappointed and it'll be a worth upgrade. I only paid $20 for the PCTVR, which is actually a crippled Pinnacle card, but the PCTVR had great image and sound quality (although only mono sound). Anyone moved from an IOMagic PCTVR or low end Pinnacle card to this one?

Also, newegg's description says it does Hi-Def? is this true? that'd be pretty cool if so, although ATT Broadband doesn't support Hi-Def yet, so I guess not so much of an issue.

1) You might like to check out this thread on ripping video. Not sure if this card will let you do that without another program. It does support a lot of codecs - supplied, so you may have all you need already for the levels of compression you envision.

2) It will definitely do that, for FM too, which I'm going to try.

This card is fully supported by Dscaler. It uses the same CX878 encoder/decoder that is present on most "value" cards on the market. Again, the main differences of this card over the other options is dedicated WinXP/2k drivers, more features, and better software.

The CX880 and CX881 are the ones that are not currently compatible under Dscaler. Considering retail products based on this chip have only been available for a few months, support is coming along quite nicely IMO. The site itself isn't a good indication, you should check out the forums. Remember, the guys working on Dscaler don't get paid for it, so support implementation is obviously going to take longer. There's still a few bugs they are trying to work out, but the latest 4.x alpha already has some CX880 and CX881 support. The IQ of the CX880 is already quite excellent w/out Dscaler, it can only improve once it is supported.

There was an extensive review of this card at Overclockers.com/au, but I can't seem to find it anymore. I've been using it for about a month now and it is excellent, much better than any of the value cards in the past. I was considering the Leadtek XP2000, but from reviews, I read it was basically the same cards from Pinnacle/WinTV/ATi based on CX878 with a few more features and better WinXP/Win2K drivers. I had some bad experiences, so I didn't leave anything to chance and went with the newest card for under $100.

The software is all Cyberlink, top-notch stuff including the latest version of PowerDVD 4.0 (rebadged as AsusDVD). I purchased this card based on the OC.com australia review as well as JeSpre's original review found here on AT:

Actually, I don't like the software for the ASUS. I just ordered the LeadTek and hopefully it will be better.

This is a great value card, however, I think the Asus TV880 is the best card under $100. More features, newer 10bit encoder/decoder, larger software suite, and more inputs.

Where can I find about the Asus TV880? I did a google search and nothing showed up. Nothing on the Asus site. I did find the TV-in-a-box, but it doesn't look like a grpahics card.

I would like a PCI card(My motherboard does not have an AGP slot) to record TV shows. This Leadtek card looks nice, but would like to compare to others.

Also if I copy a 2 hour VCR tape to my HD to burn to a CD, does it take 2 hours? If so, can I use my computer in the mean time, or is it best to find something else to do? Is it really easy to do?

Its about $30 more, but peace of mind was worth it IMO (only $20 more when I got it).

Agreed, but check the FORUM and see the July/august postings from the developers saying support was 'right around the corner'. Also agree they dont get paid for it, so dont hold their feet to the fire. Also dont make purchases based on what unpaid developers said they'd do 'real soon now' six months ago. All that being said, its a good card at a decent price if its what you need.

Card is back in stock at Newegg; I just ordered one.

I have the non-deluxe version that work great. And the TV antenna is separate from the FM antenna. In fact, although an FM antenna is supplied that works fine, you really should hook up the TV antenna to your cable.

Just received it today. Wow... quite efficient packaging. I've never seen a component this tightly packed before. The sound card I just bought came in a box over four times the size ;p Haha

I almost jumped in on this deal when AT users first realized that they were selling the deluxe version for the price of the non-deluxe but I listened to one AT'er who said he knew something and said to buy the Avermedia tv capture card.. Well, he was so wrong... I bought the Avermedia card and it was alright but left me wanting so I eventually jumped in on this card... I got this card about 6 months ago and it is SOO much better than the avermedia (and my friend's winTV)... I highly recommend this card, I may even buy a 2nd one to replace my avermedia piece of junk that is in my other computer..

I got this card around a month ago and love it, I use it all the time. Game systems look pretty good on a nice monitor too if you hook it up via Svideo.
