Actually, it can be used for applications. Search for a remote program like girder.

i want to be able to use something to record baseball/basketball games on my pc from my directv while im at work, will this be able to do it? if it can, how big will the files be before they're compressed?

try using a cable you know is good (don't split it) and see if that works.

I tried that also and still garbled. Any other ideas?

Have you tried capturing uncompressed then encoding to mpeg1 afterwards with tmpgenc or other software? How does that affect the quality?

Maybe. Give some thought as to how this thing will change channels for you. Or you'll probably need to leave your directtv on the right channel. I get around 8-9 gigabytes per hour uncompressed.

I believe that for scrambled channels, you're going to need a descrambler/cable box in order to view those channels. I don't believe this card will descramble those channels for you. Essentially, what ever channels you can view on TV if you connected the cable directly to it will be what you're able to view using this card, if that makes sense. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Check your sound blaster EAX settings. I know in mine there is a sound scheme that makes all voices sound like chipmunks. Kinda fun to play with. Does this do it in all sounds on your computer or just this card?

This only happens on this TV card...I tried playing around with the Recording Audio Options some...and made a little progress...

If I choose Audio Recording Line to something like WAVE, or like SPDIF-IN...then the live audio sounds fine, but when I record...there is no sound...and I did check to make sure recording volume was up. However, If I stick with "Line In" for Audio Recording...people still sound like chipmunks during the live tv...but when I record something...the sound is normal...

It's a bit of a hassle...but that's what I have to do now depending if I'm recording or watching live tv....

Can't figure out what other sound options I might be missing....

The only thing I can suggest, other than some sort of driver problem that causes hiccups, is that maybe your quality settings are too high? Personally, when I record directly to DivX, I only do so for cartoons like Futurama. The quality isn't as nice as I'd like it for regular TV. Maybe if I brought up the bitrate high enough to make normal TV capture to my liking, perhaps I'd experience the same problems. I'll see what I get.

I get around 3-4 GB/hour with the Optimal Quality MPEG2 option, and the quality is quite good. I don't notice a particular difference between these and live TV. But I'm using an antenna, not directTV, on MY wishlist!

The problem with recording large files with mpeg2 is that you'll have to burn a dvd to get them off your computer. The mpeg2 format enocded using the Leadtek TV2000XP tuner seems impossible to convert into any compressed format, without introducing permanent audio sync problems. I have a 5gb file of the NBA rookie challenge game and 1.5GB video of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest on my computer and both encoded in mpeg2 format. I have only 2 options: keep them on my computer or burn them to a dvd disc (if i had a dvd burner!). Ive tried so many different ways of compressing these files and absolutely none of them have been able to keep audio sync. That's why uncompressed avi might be a better option, even at larger file sizes.

Good to know. Fact is, I'm not in the habit of watching recorded stuff off TV more than once, but it does happen. I guess I'll have to investigate the options. FAct is also, I've had persistent A/V synch issues using this card, sometimes better sometimes worse. I have to think they could fix those issues, although I don't have insight into their origin. Here's a pretty big thread (91 posts) I started in the Video forum that discusses a lot of issues concerning ripping video and I think there's info there pertinent to our discussion. The thread is archived, so I guess there's no way of reviving it. For the time being, it's there to read.

after reading through about 80% of this long and very informative thread, i still have a question. I want to know about th IR receiver. Not the IR remote control, but the IR receiver that connects to the machine. I want to know how does it connect to the machine? I saw the asus one that connects to the machine using USB, i was wondering if this is the same. although i checked the pictures and it doesn't seem to be the case.
also, when connected to the machine, does winxp recognizes it as a IR device? can it be use with other IR products? I have a T68i which i use the IR to do data transfer with my laptop, i'll like to do the same with my desktop. Just wondering if this IR receiver will do the trick.

Yeah I know what you mean....I actually think I have found a bug in the software. For the built in uncompressed avi setting, no matter what resolution you choose, I think it automatically downscales the resolution to 320x240 for no apparent reason. I was having the same problem....I would capture in avi uncompressed and the quality would be horrible.

Instead of using the built-in avi uncompressed recording feature. Download the HuffyUV codec to record in uncompressed avi. This records in lossless avi format with all available resolutions, although it results in some pretty big files!

Shd solve my problem......for the large size files.......now's the time to put the 1 GB Ram and the 80 GB HD ($1.50) which I picked up thru deals here.

I have had this tuner for a few weeks and it works great.

Just one thing: When I start it up most of the time it hangs and I have to shut it via Windows task manager.

Then when I try to start it the 2nd time it starts up fine.

Annoying...I wonder if updating to the latest Direct X would help? I have 8,0

I have a small request. Can anyone who has this card upload a small amount of capture material or possibly PM me so that I can receive it over aim? I want to see what the quality is from a decent source (digital cable or satellite television, but NOT DVD) at 640x480, at 30fps. I just want to see how good the picture quality on this thing can look.
