2. Riot runs their own league, LCS, their world championships are coming up in Oct, prize pool was 1 mil USD I believe? Not sure. players are also paid a salary during the season.
Riot LCS is split into NA and EU. both consistently pull 100 - 150K concurrent viewers when matches are going.
Certain LoL players regularly pull 20K+ concurrent viewers while streaming.
There is no LCS in Korea but Korean media (OGN) run their own tournament. LoL has replaced BW as the big e-sports game in Korea. unlike BW which was free admissions to attend final events, I believe the latest LoL final in Korea had some entry fee for spectator attendance.
some random images of Korean LoL sizes
Valve just started expanding Dota 2 to Korea. I can't wait to see how Koreans perform. Will the Korean wave take over and sweep them all? Or will we see a nice love triangle between Korea, China & West? (sorry for rambling)
I don't know how Koreans will perform in DotA 2. LoL is HUGE in Korea. I think Valve might have taken too long to make DotA 2 open to the public and is too late in trying to break the foothold that LoL has established in Korea. So I don't know the kind of resources that Korean DotA 2 teams will receive in terms of building a training environment and how big the Korean player base will be that will play at a competitive level in DotA 2.
3. What's the pro scene of LoL like? Could you name and rank some top teams? I hear Koreans are utterly dominating. Is is as bad as Koreans did with Starcraft? Foreign teams are a rare sight in SC.
Koreans are dominating LoL. they have a different approach and style of play than the NA & EU teams. don't get to see how the Korean teams play the NA or EU teams that often because Riot has split the regions due to the LCS, but the difference in skill & decision making is apparent.
There will be a World Championships where top teams from Korea, NA, EU, and Oceanic will play against each other. It will be held in Staples Center.
Riot was also able to get the United States to consider LoL a sport (same status as MLB, NFL, NBA) for visa purposes recently.
