2. What is the biggest tournament of LoL and what is the highest prize pool? Dota's biggest annual tournament by Valve is currently $2.5 mil USD over 5 days. Then typical third-party tourneys range from $10-50k.

3. What's the pro scene of LoL like? Could you name and rank some top teams? I hear Koreans are utterly dominating. Is is as bad as Koreans did with Starcraft? Foreign teams are a rare sight in SC. Currently in Dota 2, the Chinese dominate. But you got some very strong Western teams as well. I'd say the skill and domination distribution is about 60% Chinese & 40% Western. Valve just started expanding Dota 2 to Korea. I can't wait to see how Koreans perform. Will the Korean wave take over and sweep them all? Or will we see a nice love triangle between Korea, China & West? (sorry for rambling)

Hey Zeze

2. Don't know what S3 prize pool will be, but WC for season 2 was last summer and the prize pool was 2 million with 1 million going to the 1st place winners. Third party tournaments used to have prize pools of around 10-50k but the smaller organizers got a bit shafted in Season 3.

Starting Season 3, Riot internalized the pro-circuit in the western scene by restricting the point circuit to games won/lost in a Riot run league called LCS. So the top 8 pro teams who have qualified hold weekly matches to determine end of the season standings. Keep in mind that there's a NA and EU LCS. The big thing to draw from this is that the 16 western teams are salaried by Riot for participating in LCS. The asian has had weekly matches setup for their league in S2, the only difference is that team income is reliant on prize pools.

Now for 3rd party tournaments. Large tournaments are working with Riot to schedule their LCS at the events, keeping the best of both worlds for the two organization. Smaller tournaments have to settle with hosting amateur/non LCS teams. This obviously means less viewers, so less sponsors.

3. Unfortunately we can only really rank teams against their current regional league, although we can surely speculate about their potential in worlds. Koreans are good, great even, but they're not at SC dominance yet. I think it's pretty much a coin flip with Korea vs China. EU has a slim chance, but I'm not holding my breadth. SEA had last year's champion but their top(and only decent) team had a lot of their core players retire or move to other teams. NA, lol no. NA doesn't have a chance in hell except in Bo1 group stages where they might be able to cheese a win. Maybe one team has a chance of taking games off the asian region based on skill and not cheese.

FYI, Riot announced its $2M prize pool and then a few days later Valve was like "HEY YOU GUUUUUUUYYYYYS! WE HAVE A BIG PRIZE POOL TOO"

What? How could you get this utterly, exactly backwards?

In 2010 when Dota 2 beta was first revealed, Valve also announced The International tournament with a prize pool of $1.6 mil USD. And then a few days later Riot was like "We have a bigger $2M prize!" which was 'misleading' since it was $2M was for the entire year, not one tournament like Valve's.

This year Valve brilliantly crowd-sourced their prize pool for the first time. On top of the $1.6 mil, if you buy an electronic compendium (amazing value on its own), 25% of the proceeds go to the prize pool.

It's been an explosive success. A triple win-win-win for audience, company, and pro teams. The prize pool is currently at $2,559,322 USD now. Valve hasn't increased jackcrap since 2010- they put up the same $1.6mil prize pool.

Where did Valve make such claim? So far Valve's been minding their own business, never directed a single comment towards LoL or Riot. I even remember a childish ad from Riot on Garena platform. It said something like 'Why play Dota? REAL MEN PLAY League of Legends."

At least get the facts straight or base it on a non-fabrication.

[edit]
Oh and uh.. people think it's creepy and masturbatory how Riot pays LoL's pro teams.

Riot is literally paying people to play their game. The gamers are employees, even the casters are employees of Riot. No real 'grassroots' growth from real audience, sponsors, or third-parties (similar to other eSports games like Starcraft, Quake, CS, or Dota 1 & 2).

This is scary. And it's been discussed many times that it's terrible for eSports scene.

2 mil was for the season finals. They did 5 mil at tourneys over the course of the year. Including a ton of grassroots events. I went to a small local lan (maybe 20 teams) with a few friends that had Riot sponsored prizes. Also ads on Garena aren't put up by Riot. LoL is distributed in SEA by Garena just like Dota and HoN.

Riot's heavy involvement has made NA & EU completely dependent on Riot eSports wise, but Riot's heavy involvement has also turned LoL into the biggest eSport game so I can't really fault them for their business / eSports strategy

Haven't been playing much LoL the last couple months. I think I got burned out on it for a bit. I log in once a week to play a quick ARAM and then go do something else. I would love the Elise skin since I jungle her a lot, but don't think I'll get Gold before end of the season. Last I checked I was a win away from Silver 3 promo matches and I'm sure my points have dropped from lack of ranked play decay.

Same. I found it doesn't irritate me nearly as much when people don't show for ARAM or leave mid way through (which STILL happens almost every game). I play a game or 2 and go do something else.

Quick FYI if anyone really wants to put in work to get better, these are the absolute best videos I've ever seen on how to play (not just basics): https://www.youtube.com/user/unswlolsoc/videos?view=0

As a bonus in episode 4 when he's talking about silver league mistakes and how to exploit them one "xstrifex" makes an appearance (roughly 33min in).

Watched a few, thought hmm interesting. Went and played a ranked and immediately got trolled by a last pick who didn't want to support and trolled the entire game (and actively worked at making us lose). Of course the other team gave 2 shits about it. No, as good as these guides are, they don't solve the real issues of this game. The assholes who are only there to get their way or to piss people off...which regardless of what Riot says, are still very prevalent. The game would go much smoother if one assumed if you are last pick you're going to be support. Then at least it's a surprise when you're not.

And that's just one aspect of whats wrong with this "team" game..don't even get me started on all the random crashes, lag, dc's, etc that at least 1 player in every game has.

I don't know if these codes still work - there should be two working codes of each. I got 4 pax skin codes, but I don't know which two I've used:

Gone!

I've had this debate so I'm just going to state this and not reply to any debate, but I promise you a better player gets out of bronze/silver league. Yes you get trolled, yes you get unwinable games but if you're consistently better than the competition you will rise in Elo/MMR/leagues. There is one champ of the 10 you can control, don't worry about the others. If you really don't want to deal with random teams, find people to play with there are sites/chatrooms etc dedicated to this.

ranked is a combination of skill, mind set (accept that shit happens but try to make the most out of it), and getting team mates to play together

I'll have to watch them for their value, but that's too funny. I remember that game vaguely because you don't see too many Ryze players stacking 3 ROAs. I thought when you said I was in it I was going to be an example of bad play!

edit: I've been playing DOTA2 lately, working my way through they're excellent tutorial. Man... it just makes me realize how shitty LoL's front end is. Riot should really start to think about investing in building a new one not based on Adobe AIR. And get over their stupid aversion to built in voice com because Valve puts it into all of their games and its just fine.

Well this sucks. I can't get LoL to launch. I click button, the LoL initial splash screen flashes, then nothing. I've tried reinstalling and every known launcher fix I can find. What's even stranger is that I tried just before leaving for work and the launcher loaded up, patched the game, and I was able to login and browse the shop and my profile. But once again I'm back to the same problem as before.

At least a few other people are reporting the same problem as I am on the forums.
