A well placed jab at the ego of your opponent is a valid tactic. If you think people are unable to be rattled by a little trash talk, giving you the advantage, you're wrong. And it certainly isn't childish. However, the internet allows for people do go beyond simple trash talk and just act stupid.

I do understand some people just don't understand trash talking. Those people also tend to be less competitive. If you've never had a pick up game end in a near fight, you've never tried hard enough.

I don't disagree that a little trash talk is sometimes a part of competitive games, but being overly upset because you *couldn't* trash talk, like the OP is doing, is most definitely childish. So I think in this case the restriction successfully serves its purpose

WoW failed as an MMO due to this for me.
I know there were "PvP servers" but the setup of the game was atrocious.

Lineage 2, you could be regularly killed while farming just because someone "felt like it". But it didn't stop there, no one just killed you and walked away. No, you killed someone, stood over their body, and talked smack to that person. You let them know what it was.

This built rivalries, it built PVP for the SAKE of PVP, not because there was an Arena or anything, but because Clan Xenophocks was a bunch of noobs who could only win a fight by sneaking up on you while you were mobbing enemies and if you saw them, it was PVP/PK on site, irregardless of items you had on you that were at stake.

Is there any gametype we haven't sheltered the living hell out of gamers at by now?

At this point, gamers are extremely fragile mentally, even saying "Hey, don't overextend next time." is enough to have a person burst into a wild fit of rage because "You're bullying them!!!"

It's true. More and more 13-16 (I consider 11-16 kids) year olds are on LoL everday. The report system is broken also. I hardly say anything toxic in game and I got the 45 game chat restriction. What the fuck right? People who feed and afk DO NOT GET PUNISH! It's bullshit.

If you want to talk age range, it's usually the 20-25 year old kids that are consistently annoying.

They might as well age restrict you to play the game now. Chat restrictions left right and center for speaking your mind or trash talking the other team. Ranked restrictions for doing the same. Man what happened to competition? What happened to being able to make your enemy feel bad for losing, this is a competitive game this isn't child's play. If you feel hurt after a game because someone said something to you, suck it up and move on. Instead this game has become the epitome of tattle tales. Its breeding a generation of people unable to handle the real world. Never knew game developers had to become baby sitters as well. Shame on them, shame on Riot, and shame on the League community for supporting a lack of freedom. My 2 cents.

...wait, you're complaining because you want to make the other team feel bad because you beat them? You're one of the reasons I stopped playing LoL. The other reason is that too many people play and troll. You can't leave, you're forced to sit through the whole torture fest and watch Mundo build AP (I saw this in Season 1 I believe. No health. No warmogs...nothing to add durability. Mundo doesn't scale with AP. I was playing as Ashe I think and he just copied my build. It was PAINFUL. And he was trolling. We were rolled pretty badly in there.)

Look, win or lose just end the game with a "gg" and go back into the queue. The developers had to become babysitters because many people playing LoL acted like a 5 year old on the playground.

Awww you got sad when people made fun of you after they beat you?

Actually, no. I just laugh at how damned immature many gamers are (is it any wonder that gamers are branded as failures at life living in their mommy's basement? The most obnoxious ones act so damned immature.) I get more annoyed at the obvious trolls, or the people who are somehow just bots (the matches where you're the only real player. The other 4 move up if you do, fall back if you do and fall back to spawn if you die. The only conclusion I've come to is they're bots that are leveling accounts.

The morons who need to trash talk are trash themselves. I feel the same way whether it's people in a game, or someone who just got a sack or a touchdown on a football field. Grow up and learn what sportsmanship is.

As for "censorship" in games - this is becoming common now. Look at how XBox Live has a rating system now too. Your rank falls some, you get a warning. If it keeps falling, you eventually can't even join games.

That's another problem with the game...I get feeding when people aren't good (if they're at least trying) - the AFKs should get pretty serious repercussions, starting with bans lasting a day or two and ending with only being allowed to play with other AFKers. That'll be a fun game to watch.

I'd heard about the reporting players for trash talking in this game, the world is becoming too politically correct, no one can open their mouth without saying something that offends other people.

The standard should be free speech with additional tools to mute other players so you can't see/hear what they're saying, that's completely sufficient. Babysitting your entire fan base is completely and utterly ridiculous.

Back in the day at least we'd have player run servers where rules were per server and admins could boot players breaking the rules, that allowed for shit-talking friendly places where everyone who isn't a sensitive baby could have a giggle or two.

Oh well, I don't really play LoL anyway and probably won't go back.

This is the point that so many people miss. Everyone is so sheltered now, they get offended over everything. At this point in time you are getting reported for constructive criticism. Telling someone "Hey you really should ward, or maybe you should stop engaging" is all of a sudden a personal attack that gets you reported. There is no end to the bullshit. Too many people on this forum here never stood up to the bully. It seems most of you are angry with "verbal abuse" because it really hits home. If you really didn't care what people had to say about you or to you then it should be a non-issue.

Actually it is quite easy to speak without offending other people. If you have a problem with that then you are the problem not the other people.

The standard should be free speech with additional tools to mute other players so you can't see/hear what they're saying, that's completely sufficient. Babysitting your entire fan base is completely and utterly ridiculous.
And you have the absolute right to free speech, you are quite able to say anything you want, you just might have to face the consequences. The government will do nothing against you for trash talking someone in a game. But that is not what you are asking for, you want consequence free speech, and that just doesn't happen.

I've played since Season 1, well over 4k games by now. I've never been chat banned or suspended. No one I play with regularly has ever been chat banned or suspended. Which has led me to believe if you're getting chat banned or suspended you're saying stupid shit.

Been playing since about 6 months before S1 started. I am not a regular player anymore, but I have never once been chat restricted either.

The people i know of who have been chat restricted are the ones calling people racist terms, calling people homophobic slurs, etc.
It's just a game, and while you should be allowed to speak your mind, the other players shouldn't have to see your racist/homophobic rants, nor should they be required to mute you if that is a regular thing.

You don't get a chat restriction from a 1 time offence. Chat restrictions are only given to the people who rarely have anything positive or helpful to say, not because they called someone a shitty player 1 time. It's for the people who go into games and flame EVERY match.

I dont see any problems with how rito has handled toxic players in the community.

It is funny because telling someone "Hey, you should really ward" in HoN will get a much different response than reported.

There are really two types of people in the world: and determining which you are is easy. Watch Glengarry Glenn Ross, not even the entire thing, just the beginning and, if directed towards you, decided how you feel about Alec Baldwin's speech. It will either fire you up or get you upset. If it gets you upset, I'd advise not being on the internet.

Also, I feel that the people who complain about abuse in games like LoL and Dota are generally those that are doing poorly. Nobody complains because the other teams constantly calls them a "try hard" when they are always winning.

Nah you are missing the point here. This isn't S1 or tribunal. This is a new system they just implemented in the last few months that is a bit over-reacting in terms of dealing with toxicity. It's an automated system (computer decision based). They claim they manually look at all reports that are determined to be bannable but that seems unrealistic, and they are catching a lot of heat over it. It's banning and chat restricting people left and right. I'm sure there are those that never get them, but that was kind of my first point. I played this game for 4 years w/o so much as a warning, and suddenly I can't even tell someone to drop a ward w/o getting a chat restriction.

That's the thing there is no way they they are looking at individual cases when they have 30 million+ players. The system is clearly going off of numbers. If you get reported x amount of times they dish out y punishment. And this leaves you in a grey hole. I have been in countless games where 2 or 4 people queue up together and report you if you wrong one of them. Its a joke.

The few cases recently I have seen make it to the front page of r/leaugeoflegends complaining about being chat restricted by the new system didn't seem too solid once Lyte came on and showed everyone snippets of the players in questions chat logs.
http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=4911009
that's just one example from recently.

if you feel you have been unfairly chat restricted, feel free to complain on the forums/reddit. Lyte loves to bring down the ban hammer, with a public display of chat logs to boot.

Stop using your online anonymity as an excuse to be a dickhead. Did you know the way people talk to each other online would actually get somebody hurt in real life? In the real world, 98% of people are polite to each other.

Have you ever played sports? Probably not, you must not of left your house as a kid. You think everything is black and white? Leave your house every now and then and see what life is like.

If anyone ever went to school, had a job, socialized every now and then you might realize not everyone is the sweetheart you imagine in your dreams. People are people, some are assholes some are nice. If you are afraid of the assholes get a tinfoil hat on and pray.

I played football when I was much younger and as I was always bigger than most the other kids, I was the guy who ran with the football. I find spectator sports boring, and competitive fans to be tiresome. The noise, the energy, it's all just so fatiguing. They all just need to calm the F down, get over it, shut up, sit down and watch the game.

I've also been in the service industry for most of my working career (phone CS, in-store CS, and now a management position in the restaurant industry), and I found that people on the phone are much more hostile, verbal and abusive, simply because you're just a voice on the other end of the line, than they are in-person.

I think you're the one that needs to leave the house if you think most people are assholes in real life. In my experience, most people are polite, while relatively very few are assholes.

I have, infact I was a professional umpire. If you had played any real sports you would know that almost every sport has an unsportsmanlike conduct rule that would get you a penalty, if not flat out ejected, for saying half the things that kids shout at each other over voice chat.

Trash talking just motivates me more........that was a regular thing in all the sports I played (especially B-Ball). However, we ALL had an unwritten rule of keeping it civil, and all of us knew the limit in talking trash.

We also knew how to lose like men and didn't resort to being a bunch of crying Nancies (seems to be popular nowadays).

What's the point of MOBA's or MMOs now? They have vastly changed since 10 years ago.

I won't play these games that are catering towards casual gamers. Everything has pushed towards "Get as many people as possible to play your game to get as many micropayments as possible!" That's what this boils down to. MICROPAYMENTS.

I'm not even sure anymore if I'm playing a game or playing the Kim Kardashian mobile app.
