So at least some price drops are happening, for whatever it's worth. A sub $200 5850 takes on the GTX460 1GB pretty well...

Although if those get to that point without the MIR, I am going to have to find a new mobo for a 5850 setup. My 750i FTW won't allow a 2nd right now.

That depends what kind of insider information doesn't it?

I've been privy to many projects at my former job that are "classified" but that doesn't mean I know every detail, even fundamental things akin to naming scheme. Left hand not knowing what the right is doing and all that.

If the source is from engineering they may only give code names and have no idea or inclination as to what marketing will call them in the end (specially with such an odd change as 7 to 8).

Not that i have any reason to believe silver's unsubstantiated claims.

I dunno, I think we should pass judgement once Cayman comes out. Then we will know for sure. And as Slowspyder pointed out, price cuts are true too.

Yea, it is a lot of money up front, but if you don't mind rebates you can have a card that is faster than the GTX460 for less money.

We'll see if more manufacturers drop prices, but it would appear MSI is starting to clear some inventory.

he proved he was just making stuff up when he said there will be a small increase in ROPs. we all knew the 6870 was going to 256bit so that meant either 16 or 32 ROPs would be the likely number. so thats either no increase or doubling and I questioned him twice with no response.

I recall it was to compare it with current gen cypress.

And it was for Cayman, not Barts. Who knows, if it was during september, a lot of info was disinformation.

Then again, it could be performance, much more TMU and a slight increase in ROP.. performance. Ppl under NDA can be vague when you ask.

Edit: The benchmarks are "fake" (crap early drivers with minimal 6K support), with recent drivers, Cayman XT is actually a lot faster.
