DOCSIS 3.0 is great on paper but that's only half the story. Factor in Commu-cast's management and you have (hate to use the term!) a sinking ship.

Sure you have bandwidth and they plug you into an overloaded network.

I encourage users to post tracerts to known ips. Comcast vs. Verizon FIOS.

Funny how the speedtests in areas where FIOS is show much higher UPLOAD. Of course the speed test is not aggressive enough to know the burst. Those seeing 5Mbit UL on Comcast will see it drop down to 2Mbps or even lower after approximately the first 50MB of data. The DOWNLOAD is also like this.

If you get 20/20 from Verizon you get that all the time. No speed boost garbage. If Comcast took off the clip and let everyone run at those speeds their service would slow to a snails pace and they know it.

Comcast is scared fecesless in FIOS areas.

I never had any major issues with Comcast but I didn't even wait until the grass started growing over the FIOS trenching to call and schedule the switch. Over 3x speed increase, no monthly usage cap (not that I was in any danger of hitting Comcast's 250GB), and cheaper to boot. I have had DirecTV since 1996 so the TV part didn't factor in but just bundling phone and internet gave me a nice savings.

Let's compare non-promotional rates and compare speeds, no?

Be sure to pm me in 2 years. That's when my current rate ends. And unlike today, I'd guess that 90% of your hood will be on Docsis 3 by then. We'll do a speed test, and then download a torrent of whatever distro of linux is popular, and we will do it between 6-8pm on a weekday. Unless I upgrade to the next tier, I know that my speed will average exactly what I'm paying for, 25mbps. Yours however, will drop to at least 70% of what you pay for after about 15 minutes. I say at least 70%, because that's what it does now.

How much do you pay for 25mbps down?

FIOS aggregation bandwidth is going to get saturated as well as they add more customers. It's actually in comcast's best interest if the heavy user switch to FIOS.

Passive optical networks (PON) scale really well at the access layer but they still have to get to the aggregation/distribution layer and that's where the crunch will be.

We're all slaves to the internet... no matter how fast or slow

I've been itchin' to switch - but from a price comparison standpoint, FIOS would save me only about $5.00 per month.

I used to be able to download at 1.2mb/sec, now I can't download past about 300 kbps on comcrap.

I have hit upwards of 3mb/s downloading games with Comcast. I have been using Comcast since it hit my area, and have enjoyed every minute of it. I was originally anticipating FIOS for a long time but Comcast keeps making their stuff faster and faster... I don't know if FIOS will be worth it anymore.

They're making it faster and faster because they're probably losing customers left and right to FiOS and U-verse.

They've been improving their speeds since long before FIOS was around. When Comcast hit this area, the speed was 1.5mbps, now it's 20-24mbps as I test it, don't know what the advertised rate is. Needless to say, FIOS doesn't offer faster service for less anymore, so I have no reason to switch.

Nope. Their goal was and still is 100% docsis 3.0 by end of calendar year 2010. They are the leading MSO in 3.0 deployment and market penetration. Basically Comcast is the leader in cable internet service. It's not even close.

-edit-
And IIRC they wanted 80% by end of 2009 which was an incredible undertaking.

Maybe that's because they've bought out all the small/better cable companies? It's hard not to be the "leader" when you have absolutely NO competition in most cities. I have a choice between comcast and...well, as far as cable goes, no one! I switched to DTV years ago and it's light years beter than Comcast.

It's sad when you're too stupid to realize that your company has an obvious problem when the majority of your customers hate you. Spidey, have you ever wondered why you're always having to defend comcast? You never see threads about how great comcast is. I see threads about how great TIOS is and about how happy they are switching from comcast ALL THE TIME. Does that not suggest anything to you? Comcast and their stupid fucking employees obviously need a lesson in customer experience. You provide the worst customer experience out of any company I've ever used. That's saying a lot because I even use SPRINT!!! Sprint is far better than Comcast.

Unfortunately for me, Fios isn't in my area. I will dump Comcast internet as soon as it is. I guess I need to look into U-Verse, but I didn't realize it was run on Fiber. I thought it was DSL.

Heh. Comcast is faster... for about 30 seconds before they start throttling the shit out of their co-called "PowerBoost" speeds for large downloads. Keep downloading those large files, and they'll throttle you to even slower speeds that make low-end DSL look good in comparison.

I have Comcast and download much more than a typical user, and it always downloads at 7 Mbps.

Yeah, yeah, I know... how dare their users actually attempt to utilize their co-called "unlimited" bandwidth they were promised in the commercials. They should be a good little sheep and pony up $295 a month for a T1 line just to make network admins like yourself happy.

Do they advertise it as unlimited? I haven't seen that word in Comcast's ads in years.

I also just signed up for FiOS (leaving Comcast). Previous cost was $110 for Cablet + Internet + ~$20 for Vonage + $13 for TiVo = $143 with no HD service (just the networks in HD which are free)

With FiOS I got 1 HD Home Media DVR (can watch recorded shows on any other STB in the house), 1 HD box and 1 SD box + 15/5 Internet + VOIP phone service for about $108 a month; the price goes up $10/month after the first year.

I wish we had that choice. Here it is Comcast, DSL, or a variety of dish companies. Thats it. These ISPs have no incentive to upgrade speeds here. I would kill for FIOS or U-VERSE availability to change that.

Unlimited simply means you have unlimited ACCESS only. A connection that's always on use it at will. Never did they say you could download against the caps 24/7. A residential connection is not designed for that.

Go price a 100Mbps UNLIMITED bandwidth handout at a datacenter! It's going to be much more than your Comcast bill. Now getting that to your house multiplies the rate by at least 10-15X NOT including the equipment that you need for termination, etc.

I do agree using unlimited loose like that is dumb. Almost as dumb as their UP TO xMbps speeds. So when you call them on a Friday night when your 20Mbps connection is getting 1Mbps at speedtest.net they will tell you that crap.

In any case I'd drown in slobber over some of the speeds you guys have. Of course I'd have to be on LAND so I have my priorities.

When I was in NYC five years ago our office had crazy speeds. The PCs net speed was limited by the 100Mbps port they were plugged into. I remember getting 12MB/S on FTP transfers! Ping to some major sites in the single digits. That's like waving a Corona in a guy's face that just walked through Death Valley!

No, what is sad is you don't understand basic business. WHY did comcast become the largest multi-system operator (MSO). I don't work for comcast and never have. I'm a very happy customer of an independent system operator (ISO) for my voice/video/data on a residential level.

Because the made the correct business decisions, my ISO tried to get their service area bought by comcrap and they told them to fuck off.

go-go-gadget competition. This board just can't comprehend, nor has any experience on this subject.

I'm pretty sure you've said before that you don't work for Comcast but you have in the past... I'd look for the thread, but trying to find that post in all of the threads where you've defended Comcast would be a daunting task. Either way, I don't believe you.

Also, the go-go-gadget thing is pretty lame... It's great when there is competition, but it sucks when you don't have many options. I'm glad I have options.

They (comcast) have never signed my paycheck. Have I done engagements with them for design work, yes.

BIG difference.

Meaning you were a contract worker or worked for a temp agency. I got money says he worked for help desk or tech support through a employment agency.

Defend Comcast all you want. Simply making good business decisions and being the largest does not make you a good company. You failed to even answer to my point about the lack of any and all customer experience initiatives at Comcast. The company has one of the lowest customer satisfactions that I've seen out of most companies. You hear people talk great things about Costcos and companies like that. Do you know why? They value the customer, yet still make a profit and can be a market leader. Comcast doesn't give a crap about their customers. It's been proven time and time again.

That's because they are a multi-system operator. It's very difficult to merge all the different customer support and provisioning systems. That does not take away from how fast their internet is and how aggressive their upgrades are taking place to provide the best service to Comcast customers that they've come to expect.
