Leaving system off for long periods

Going away for about 4 months and leaving my desktop behind. I'll probably unplug it from the socket and just leave it as is. There shouldn't be any problem with inactivity right?

Wonedring because I left it unplugged when I went away for 2 weeks once, came back, and it wouldn't boot. Ended up replacing the PSU

Make sure the tank is about 80% full, and use a good gasoline stabilizer.

Disconnect the battery, drain the oil...

seriously though, it should be fine. I think you were just unlucky last time.

Electronics aside, your data should be more than safe. I had a semi-broken computer that I last booted up in Fall 2002, then I got a free laptop from school and didn't turn it on until I bought a desktop in March 2005. I took out the HD from the old computer and plugged it into the new PC to retrieve the files, and everything transferred over like a charm.

So your four months should be no problem at all, just don't leave the hard drive next to a huge magnet and you'll be fine.

Unplugged would be a good idea. Those surge protectors you buy typically suck anyways. It's all about response time. Why else do I have an $80 surge protector (no UPS) for my home stereo system....

Your data will be fine. I booted up my 90MHz computer last week that I haven't booted up since 2003. It worked fine. LoL. I'm about to try my 400 MHz K6-2 last booted in 2002.

Yes, unplugged and in a good climate controlled area, it will be just fine. No problems at all.

Check the voltage on your CMOS battery with a meter. If it is under 3.0V, I would get a new one. Li batteries tend to fall off a cliff when they die. That will insure your settings will be retained until you get back.

I'd take the CMOS battery out from the mobo and make sure the system's put in a cool dry place.
