18 months and not a hint of burn-in on my Panasonic plasma.
???
You must be one of the lucky ones to have a Panny Plasma that lasted 18 months

This is the problem with this thread. This guy has already said he didn't want to spend more than $600 on a TV. All our discourse is purely academic. With that budget all TV techs will be the same.

First off LED and LCD are one in the same.... both LCD displays
if OP's budget is 600, he can either by a garbage example of an LCD display or a half @ss decent plasma. He seems to be stuck on this "LED" term like it somehow makes the PQ better. at a $600 price point, I can promise you it won't. If anything, you will be getting numerous issues related to the LED back lighting that a CCFL back-lit LCD display would have less of.
I have a 2006 model yr panny that is still going strong. actually now mounted in my kids room, can't tell you the number of times he has fallen a sleep with some static menu on the screen.... and no burn in...
heck, my in laws have a maxent "extended definition" plasma from 04 or 05 that is still kicking.
I am all for LCD panels -> for my computers, but for my living room displays, plasma all the way.
my in laws have a panny TC-P50S30 plasma fail at 6 month and 13 months...
while my 720p 50" is still going strong after 3 years.
Wow, I thought I was in the minority knowing that Plasma had the best quality picture out of these three options.
I'm really waiting for LPD to be readily available to the consumer market.
what failed on it?
regardless of plasma or LCD the most likely component to fail is the power supply...
and if one wants to talk about longevity, both technologies displays will likely outlive their supporting components... keep in mind, most plasma displays are rated to 100k hrs. Compare that to the backlighting components used in LCD displays.
I also want to point out, the only plasma displays I personally have seen have issues or fail have been samsung. I personally only own pioneer and panasonic
I'd say it has the best picture quality at the high end (especially because of the blacks) and the best value in the mid-end (because everyone just love buying LCDs). LED LCDs in the $1500-2000 range win out because it's just below the cost of the good plasmas that you'd really want to splurge your money on.
I am in the process of acquiring someone's broken plasma and do board swap on the A board. This is a fairly common phenomenon apparently. The panny plasma dying part.
/shrugs
Mine is still going at the 2 year mark and showing no issues. I'll be upgrading to a 50" GT model this year.
Honestly, it just the luck of the draw. All things electronic can break and some people just are unlucky.
Thing is I look up those errors and there are tons of results, which tells me it is not as isolated as Panny would like us to believe.
there is even an fb group. though there isn't a lot of people in it.
The thing is (and has always been) is that when things break, that is when people tend to be the most vocal. So lets say you have 50 - 100 people on various websites on the internet complaining about Panasonic's TV's. How many do you think are out there they don't have a problem and we don't know because they don't post? 1000? 10,000? 100,000?
It is a sad fact but nowadays it seems the minority are the ones that get the attention.
At any rate, I typically comb over the AVS forums before I purchase a TV. It is amazing how much information one can gather from there.
shrug, this ain't 50-100... this has been many models and years. just look on youtube. When there are many videos teaching people how to fix it, you know there is an issue.

I have a 50" 720p Panny Plasma that is coming up on 3 years of use with no burn in and still looks great. I purchased a 46" 720p Panny Plasma from Best Buy black friday last year for $400 and it's been going strong as well. I'm extremely pleased with Panny's plasmas. That being said I also always get Squaretrade Extended Warranties just in case!
