I just realized my Panasonic plasma is almost 8 years old. No burn in. Still bright as I need it to be. Still a great picture, although low resolution compared to now-a-days. A much better picture quality, IMO, than some of my friends with brand new screens still adjusted to max color & brightness from the factory.

I'm a pretty frugal guy, but I never regretted that purchase.

First off LED and LCD are one in the same.... both LCD displays

This is the problem with this thread. This guy has already said he didn't want to spend more than $600 on a TV. All our discourse is purely academic. With that budget all TV techs will be the same.

if OP's budget is 600, he can either by a garbage example of an LCD display or a half @ss decent plasma. He seems to be stuck on this "LED" term like it somehow makes the PQ better. at a $600 price point, I can promise you it won't. If anything, you will be getting numerous issues related to the LED back lighting that a CCFL back-lit LCD display would have less of.

You must be one of the lucky ones to have a Panny Plasma that lasted 18 months

I have a 2006 model yr panny that is still going strong. actually now mounted in my kids room, can't tell you the number of times he has fallen a sleep with some static menu on the screen.... and no burn in...

heck, my in laws have a maxent "extended definition" plasma from 04 or 05 that is still kicking.

I am all for LCD panels -> for my computers, but for my living room displays, plasma all the way.

Every plasma I have seen in someone's house suffers from flicker, which is a dealbreaker for me and I'd argue is one aspect of picture quality. Maybe the more expensive ones are better? Colours are noticeably more vibrant, but that could also be because most plasmas use glossy screens while many LCDs use matte. Any decent LCD/LED TV has a quite sufficient contrast ratio; I've seen some plasmas look fairly mediocre in the dark with blacks, and seen some very good LED TVs (and vice versa). All depends on configuration and specific model.

Watching a plasma reminds me of looking at a CRT monitor at 60Hz, except maybe not quite as bad. And similar to CRTs, even if the colours are better and reponse times are faster, the flicker remains, and you can't just increase the refresh rate on a TV (generally).

what failed on it?

regardless of plasma or LCD the most likely component to fail is the power supply...

and if one wants to talk about longevity, both technologies displays will likely outlive their supporting components... keep in mind, most plasma displays are rated to 100k hrs. Compare that to the backlighting components used in LCD displays.

I also want to point out, the only plasma displays I personally have seen have issues or fail have been samsung. I personally only own pioneer and panasonic

Wow, I thought I was in the minority knowing that Plasma had the best quality picture out of these three options.

I'm really waiting for LPD to be readily available to the consumer market.

I'd say it has the best picture quality at the high end (especially because of the blacks) and the best value in the mid-end (because everyone just love buying LCDs). LED LCDs in the $1500-2000 range win out because it's just below the cost of the good plasmas that you'd really want to splurge your money on.

However, hopefully all of this is moot anyway, because OLED TVs start shipping this year, and will hopefully become affordable in 3-4 years (as $10,000 for a 55" is rather expensive).

first time was 10 blinks supposedly power, second 14, which is the main A board.

I am in the process of acquiring someone's broken plasma and do board swap on the A board. This is a fairly common phenomenon apparently. The panny plasma dying part.

Perhaps this was true a few years ago, but things have changed now. Quality plasmas have really fallen in price, while good LED LCDs are still expensive.

Sony HX929 is currently $3000 from Amazon for 55". Panasonic's flagship VT50 is $2100 for 55". The ST50, which is at least as good as the HX929, is $1300.

/shrugs

Mine is still going at the 2 year mark and showing no issues. I'll be upgrading to a 50" GT model this year.

Honestly, it just the luck of the draw. All things electronic can break and some people just are unlucky.

Thing is I look up those errors and there are tons of results, which tells me it is not as isolated as Panny would like us to believe.

there is even an fb group. though there isn't a lot of people in it.

The thing is (and has always been) is that when things break, that is when people tend to be the most vocal. So lets say you have 50 - 100 people on various websites on the internet complaining about Panasonic's TV's. How many do you think are out there they don't have a problem and we don't know because they don't post? 1000? 10,000? 100,000?

It is a sad fact but nowadays it seems the minority are the ones that get the attention.

At any rate, I typically comb over the AVS forums before I purchase a TV. It is amazing how much information one can gather from there.

shrug, this ain't 50-100... this has been many models and years. just look on youtube. When there are many videos teaching people how to fix it, you know there is an issue.

I hate Sony. I own a Panny 50", my brother owns a Panny 50", my sister in law has a (non working) Panny 50" I decided on which tv to get in all 3 instances. Took me quite a bit of convincing for my in laws to get the Panny and the fucking thing dies. Making me look bad is usually not a way to reward my loyalty.

Last Sony TV I owned was a 29" Trinitron Tube TV

I have a 50" 720p Panny Plasma that is coming up on 3 years of use with no burn in and still looks great. I purchased a 46" 720p Panny Plasma from Best Buy black friday last year for $400 and it's been going strong as well. I'm extremely pleased with Panny's plasmas. That being said I also always get Squaretrade Extended Warranties just in case!
