I bought it and logged about 5 hours online.

No Mercy is the only campaign I've seen from start to finish - I died in the on the roof top during the final fight. We did it on advanced, it took 4 attempts and only one person made it to the chopper. Advanced difficult feels about the right for me.

Verses mode is great. With a little coordination the infected can really give the survivors a challenge. I love being the smoker, waiting on a rooftop and grabbing someone when a horde attack. I've had the tank attack very early on in this mode - the first alleyway from the demo - before we even got a 2nd handgun.

Online pugs have been good - no real idiots.

I went with the PC version mainly because of price (45 pre-order) and i will get my money out of it. I could not see myself paying 60 for the Xbox version though.

Anyway, i go by fodder boy on steam, look me up for a game.

Definitely a 9 and worth $50 to me. I'm probably less of a Valve fanboy than pontifex but this game is just too much fun. I have dozens of hilarious memories from one day of playing.

I'm sure modders can pick up stuff and make customs for it, even if valve takes a bit. It's been what, two days? And modders already have TF2's dustbowl working on it with proper lighting, enemy spawns, and safe rooms. There's also a guy who's building the mall from Dawn of the Dead. Someone will make a daylight level.

Why are you comparing this to TF2 when L4D is nothing like it? WTF?

I'm comparing it to TF2 because there are many who feel that game would have been worth $50 MSRP even thought it is multiplayer only...this game has a multiplayer that can be just as addictive as TF2 and it also has a campaign mode that can either be played alone, or with 3 other friends...THAT was my point.

valve fanboys. no way is this game a 9 or 10. maybe a 6 or 7.

I'd give it an 8. It's well implemented and very fun. Runs great on older hardware. Easy to get into but needs teamwork for harder difficulties. The lighting in the game is great, especially for how old the engine is. The only thing that kills it for me is the lack of content right now. They said 10 NEW weapons but hell, they probably meant the regular guns in the game. We need some good stuff like flame throwers and someone to have a portable minigun like Jesse Ventura in Predator. Maps and weapons please. I am a Valve fanboi btw.

I give it a 9 because it requires so much team work for the harder levels. Advanced requires a decent bit of casual teamwork (a group of friends not being uber serious, but working together enough to get through it) and even then you'll probably experience significant casualties. I still need to assemble a few good players who are willing to go all out with the tactics and strats in order to beat the whole thing on expert.

I agree with you on the weapons though, more weapons would be sweet...pistol upgrades would have been sweet, either a fully auto with extended magazine (better for fending off hoards) or perhaps magnums (increased accuracy and power better for dealing with pinned teammates and attacking Tanks).

Flame thrower, grenade launcher, full blown machine gun (not the mounted mini gun) - all could be very fun and very useful. Of all those I guess I could see the grenade launcher being a bit out of place, but the flame thrower seems like it would fit - its ammo could come from all the gas tanks that are currently meant for makeshift defensive barriers of fire, and machine guns can take the same ammo as the weapons already employed so that would make sense. As an upgrade or alternative to the SMG/assault rifle, it would be far less accurate but the ammo capacity would be much higher and ultimately much better for fending off extended hoard attacks.

Any game with functional and addictive co-op gets an immediate 10 in my book. That's right developers, want a 10 from me? Make some fucking decent coop.

Because right now, the record books look like this: Doom2, Serious Sam, Quake1, HL1/2 Synergy, and L4D. Out of those, L4D is more reminiscent of old Doom2 coop fun also.

Oh yea and my games will always be Expert. Unlike some others, I don't feel Expert is too easy, I think that's based on the demo and those people are in for a rude awakening as they progress deeper in. Although, I do think Expert should be a medium settings with something harder being above it.

Standalone was 30, orange box was 49 or so when it was first introduced why pay extra when you do not have to. Why not include CS, CS:S, DOD, DOD:S and other various multi-only games in your dull point?

I had to knock it down to a 7. Awesome game... but I hate unlimited ammo. A better option would have been to enable some type of crowbar action and have an exhaustion meter or something. You get more of a feel of desperation when you are down to your last few bullets.

Even in Zombie Panic it was kind of fun watching the other players run around with keyboards trying to whack zombies in the head.

WTB suspense and desperation. I want to be counting the last 12 shotgun shells I have as I give half of them to my buddy and sitting on a roof top wondering wtf we are going to do.

Are there missions where the team has to split up to do something. Sticking together on screen to keep from dying has been done to death. It is an action oriented game so I wouldn't demand it.

I doubt either of you have played Vs. mode in a serious manner, unlimited pistol ammo isn't going to help you at all. This isn't your average zombie survival horror, the never ending waves that can come in (if you're not fast enough) and the ambushes from the boss infected are so intense you have to be on your toes like no other game I've ever played. This is effectively a twitch shooter that requires a shitload of strategies and tactics, and if that isn't exactly your cup of tea there's always the play as the infected which is a lot more strategical strikes with ambushes and letting all the pawn AI infected do most of the damage / distraction so you can deal the killing blow.

This game might not have the same type of suspense, but it has desperation like no other - not even close when playing expert and/or vs. mode with some competent players.

If you want your more traditional zombie game we already have Resident Evil, there's no need to make a clone of that game type when that franchise already handles it so damn well with how awesome RE4 is and RE5 soon to be.

Yep, versus mode is where it's at. Pistol doesn't help with boss zombies at all. Coordinating an attack as the infected is awesome. Versus Mode is what sells this game. I just finally had my first REAL GOOD versus match. It's awesome. The co-op campain isn't too shabby either.

I've gotten really good as the Infected. You seriously need a mic in this game to effectively coordinate when playing as Infected. I even got to be Tank 3 times. I love the Boomer.

Practice, we talking 'bout practice??? You need to learn what everything and everyone does. Once you know what you're doing, it's awesome.

I have questions about L4D...

1) Are melee attacks actually killing the zombies? Or does it imply some sort of melee weapons such as swords or anything that doesn't involve the character's bare hands.

2) How is the gore? Lots of it? We can't have a proper zombie infestation without gore can we? I'm just curious, any dismemberment? Can the zombies crawl without their legs still trying to get you like the ones in Half-Life 2?

3) What determines the weapons you have to fight? Is it based on the map? Or do you need money to buy it like in CS:S or anything similar?

Thanks.

Melee's eventually kill zombies but it initially just knocks them back. Lost of gore but no it doesn't have body part specific stuff. The weapons are found throughout the game. No buying or anything. Read the Wiki

Ah, thanks.

But I've just learned that the Demo was removed since the final version was released. I won't buy it then, it's a superb decision by Valve or whoever did it, it certainly helps for sales too. Back to Fallout 3.

My boss and 7 co-workers have stayed up the past two nights playing this until 3am. This game is destroying our productivity, but damn if Versus mode isn't the best damn thing to come out since TF2/Portal...the 4.5hrs of sleep has been totally worth it

The game to me was easily worth $50, and I rarely buy games anymore, just don't have any time for them. Well, I can say that I've spent 9 hours on the full release within the past 2 days, and another 9 hours on the demo before it was canceled. There really is no better coop gaming experience than this when you find a good team and work together. It's just so damn satisfying.

Same thing! I've been up 'til 3am the last three nights, and damn if I'm not tired as hell at work.
