graphics look vastly improved, which, in addition to content, was exactly what was needed.

The graphics weren't even that bad and it didn't even need good graphics. It needed more content.

Valve have very strange priorities since the past two or three years, but of course they are right and we are wrong, they had to make a sequel to L4D that soon, for reasons we simple consumers will never understand nor would ever need to understand, as long as we pay, they're happy. I'm afraid Valve aren't exactly what they used to be.

You're not the only one. My steam page says I'm 22 hours into the game, but I'm closer to 150 hours. Don't ask how that works :shiftyeyes;

Really fun game. But yeah, they really shouldn't release a sequel that soon. They should at least make it cheap (like $10 - $20, max) for existing owners. They shelled out a decent amount of cash marketing the L4D, you would think they would wait at least 2 years to capitalize on it before releasing a new one.

The original left 4 dead was made by an outside company (basically a mod) and was bought by valve shortly before release. Likely they pushed what they had out the door, and immediately began working on something more meeting with the grander valve vision.

Jeez... For 190 hours you should be godly at it...

Not going to buy the second one. Not going to buy into that fucking hype again.

The first game is ok, but it is having a tough time stealing me away from TF2, so I can't imagine I will be buying the sequel. I really only play it if someone invites me to play through Steam, or if I have an overwhelming desire to kill zombies, which does happen on occasion.

Seems unlike Valve to release a sequel so soon.

Add me as your friend on steam already. >_> I need to know what server to go to on TF2 so I can kick your ass.

This is the server I always see him playing at:

216.83.33.146:27015

It's like 24/7 dustbowl or some stupid shit. He always plays a fucking medic.

Pretty quick for a sequel. If it goes for $30, I'll be very happy.

Hope they have more than 4 campaigns this time though.

Dont get me wrong, but thats EXACTLY what I'm concerned about... I'm at around 400 hours as its pretty much the only game I play right now and I play competitively. So obviously I have a game I'm already invested in, and from the looks of things this isn't a drastically different sequel, it really looks more like an expansion at best. Why should I or any of the other competitive L4D players leave the original we're perfectly fine with (if not in love with) for this one if its going to cost us $50?

I'm sure some will, but thats my point I made originally - unless Valve does something, I could see this game really dividing the current and potential L4D community...its just so soon.

The fact that Valve is really put effort into this game certainly is exciting, but the fact that its being called Left 4 Dead 2 suggests its going to be stand alone and cost an extra $50 when I'd much rather see it as an expansion and cost no more than $10 for those who already own L4D.

Me? I play every class really. Whatever the team needs. Yes I do play a lot of 24/7 Dustbowl though, since it's my favourite map, but I'm up for anything except 2Fort.

If you see me on, just message me if you want to play.

Maybe Valve will release L4D2 as an update to existing owners and the stand alone product will have both L4D and L4D2.

I'm sure the millions of Valve worshipers will make this a success like all of the other half-assed crap Valve has released lately. How about Episode 3?

Heh..only a year after the original at that. You'd think they'd at least make it DLC or an expansion rather than probably making us pay full price again for half a game.

This. I'm glad I only paid $20 for L4D. If I were one of the people who paid full price I would feel really slighted to have to buy the sequel a year after the first came out .. that's not really much of a lifetime for an (essentially) exclusively online game. New content for TF2, new content for L4D, a L4D sequel.. and still no Ep3? Come on.

I stumbled upon an article released last year about Left 4 Dead prior to its release, while reading the reactions of the community on L4D2's announcement at SteamPowered.com's forums, and I thought it was an interesting read after all that time since it was posted, you can read it here. Now, some eight months later I wonder if Valve really knows want they want, they remind me of one of my friend, she's the type of girl who goes in a mall with the clearly mentioned purpose of buying a pair of shoes, but she gets out with either a t-shirt or nothing.

I have over 400 hours in L4D since they started recording it, I got my money's worth. Its not about feeling ripped off, its the fact that we love the game in its current state; why should we pay $50 for what is basically the same thing at the core when we have something we already love? The bad thing about this is that we'll have players who will gladly pay the price but there are bound to be many that are happy with what they have, and thus a splitting of the community occurs...

This.

The announcement for Left 4 Dead 2 really surprised me also, seemed like totally out of left field.

Agreed. My sentiments exactly. I actually had a blast when we played a few weeks back, but for some reason, I haven't picked up it up since - and I've been on TF2 almost nightly.

I'm hoping this is the result of them going in to make more content and realizing they also wanted to address many fallbacks of the original game. I'll also have to wait for the price since I bought 4 copies of L4D already. L4D has a lot of potential in every area of the game, not just the maps. It needs more play styles, less scripted attacks, more zombie types, more interaction with the environment. I hope they take a look at Killing Floor since it has a refreshing look at how to make unique zombies without making every unique attack some scripted sequence. Not that I'd want L4D to be like KF, but I think it could learn a few things. (RPG elements work well in these games as well)

making a game that complex but keeping it balanced for Vs. play is easier said than done, which is exactly why Killing Floor doesn't have a Vs. mode

I'm not saying it can't be done, just don't expect any quantum leaps. It sounds like you're more in it for the co-op experience than the Vs. and this game is naturally going to be more catered to the Vs. crowd as they're the ones that will be investing more of their time into it.

A friend of mine who makes a six figure salary wanted me to buy this game to play co-op with him online. I told him, if he bought UT3 which was 5.99 at the time, I'd buy L4D. Zombie Panic Attack is better IMHO
