Opened up the NAS I just bought, made in 2013, and here is a picture of the RAM.

I found a pair of simms exactly the same, and it has two empty of the 4 slots, but if it would work with 8Gb simms, I'd rather max out all 4 slots, but I don't know if there are different types of ECC or speed issues, including CL9 in ebay searches does bump up the price etc. I am willing to gamble on 4 vs 8 Gb, but not if I have to worry about ECC or step issues.

You can not mix ECC with non ECC.
You do not need ECC on a NAS if your source does not have ECC to begin with, or a source your copying from does not have ECC.
Those are DDR3 modules, i believe the max cap they had for those are 8GB, i think i have heard of 16GB ECC sticks meant specifically for this guy:

But you will be very hard press to find it.

So my advice...
If none of your other PC's have ECC, i wouldn't really bother.
There is no way to clean copy anything unless both source and destination is protected by ECC.
Sure having ECC on the NAS may save you, but statically and odd's its only @ 50%, and thats 50% of the tiny possibly the data was not written correctly from the beginning (You).

There is only one NAS model under $500 (diskless) that uses ECC RAM among all the major players in the field. e.g. Synology DS723+ and that is a new model for 2023. I could have missed one or two others but not more.

Speed should be like "consumer" RAM. Your board/platform will support up to a certain speed; faster RAM will run at what the board supports. Not that extra RAM ever really hurts, but do you really need 24+ GB on a NAS?

However, there is both registered and unregistered ECC. I don't think you can mix both types.

These NOS Lenovo NAS were small bus to enterprise grade for their time, 2014, with the specific unit I have originally selling for $6k bare. It came with 2 slots out of 4 of 4GB ECC in each, so I just bought two more of the same for a total of 16GB

Tons of old server memory getting pulled out of service, so I "might" bump the ECC up to 32GB, maybe use some as a buffer, since this system will get it own UPS.

My NAS has 256GB of RAM, but that is DDR4.

If the NAS has a UPS that it uses and monitors you can use ram for a buffer, otherwise I'm not sure there is any benefit to more ram. These days a single SSD should keep up with any practical level of network traffic.
