sounds like you should license the dog...........

pay that or pay the citations, which might pile up. Think your neighbor complained or something.

I think they have people license dogs to make sure they are up to date on rabies vaccination (and to get money to pay animal control.)

You play, you pay.

"Dogs must be licensed, even if he is in your yard "24/7"." Is this a federal law Unless your generalizing your city laws to mine. I live in a small town in Idaho with 316 people. Thanks for your quick comments so far...but let's look at it logically, what is the point to licensing a dog? I figured it was so if a dog catcher picked it up they would know whose dog it is...if mine is confined the entire time this is unlikely.

Last two comments make sense...

It is a small long haired mutt...I did see it attack a mouse the other day though.

How much does it cost? It's probably not worth the hassle to fight it.

It could not possibly be a federal law.

But it's been the law everywhere I've ever been. They don't care if the dog's escape is "unlikely" it could still happen. They also want to make sure that the dog also has all his shots up to date so as not to spread any diseases.

"if the dog is in your yard 24/7 then you deserve a fine."

Trust me, it is a very large yard...comes with the rural life.

You guys are taking the fun out of the thing, it is a small town, people need their feathers ruffled at times...

just license the dog, it is for other people's safety and in case the dog gets out and gets lost. Quit being a whiney little baby and quit trying to "fight the man"

I didn't elaborate on why (as Drakkon and Bryophyte did), because I thought everyone knew that.

Can you imagine how many dogs get out of their yard, without the owners intention? When licensed (and tags, of course), the officials are able to track down the owner of the dog. Also, in case the dog bites someone, they can find out if the dog has been properly vaccinated.

Btw, what kind of "note" was on your door? Something handwritten from a neighbor, or an official notice from your city officials?

wingznut, it looks as if it was from the city. Though one of the choices to mark is "Do not won dog", so I crossed it off and wrote "I did not win dog", and selected it.

"just license the dog, it is for other people's safety and in case the dog gets out and gets lost. Quit being a whiney little baby and quit trying to "fight the man"" Umm...so the license will prevent people from getting bit...Nice contribution DORK.

How is that not a good contribution? It's not a complicated matter here. Apparently your city/town requires dogs to be licensed. Stop complaining and just follow the law and get the dog licensed. It's not like they are invading your personal property or giving you a full cavity search, they just want a record of all the dogs in the city for safety reasons. Maybe you are above the law and I just wasn't aware of it?
