I remember dual celeron 300a on bp6 and Action Quake with first Geforce 256. Bring back the fps tears man. Anyone actually done a percentage of oc ration to see which chip ocs the best. I mean like from 300mhz to 450mhz is what 66% oc? Has there been a chip that ocs 100 percent of it's stock clock?

I think 300 - 450 is only 50%................

Old Cedar Mill P4 631 (3GHz stock) was overclocked to 8GHz (LN2):

Cedar Mill Celerons are insane: 3.2GHz -> 8.5GHz

Unfortunately it seems that whatever I put off buying for the next gen was always the winner of the best value ever...

Lets see,

I've owned a P4 2.8c I bought just a few months before the Athlon 64 came out (needed it for the start of university).

I didn't get a new job until the q9550 quads were out so I went with that and missed the 6600 boat.

And my last build to replace my poor dead q9550 was a 3570k, a bit over a year after building my brother a 2500k system which when overclocked match almost exactly in linX performance for the same price a year later (I got a dog of a 3570k though)...

1) Q6600 G0 that could do 3.4ghz or higher
2) i7 920 d0 that could do 4.0ghz or higher
3) Any Sandy that could do 4.5ghz or higher

Those are of "recent" to me.

i7 920 lasted people forever. I'll always remember the joy that my 2600k brought me. Best chip in computing history.

Lasted? Still using it a D0 at 3.3 Ghz and no intention of upgrading to Haswell and my computer still feels super fast. Maybe next generation intel.

that is a terrible run of bad luck with your cpu history...but I bet there is some other aspect of your life where all your good luck and karma played out instead (and you are probably happier for it!)

That said, there is something to be said of being the perfect "contrarian signal", to which I humbly beseech you to please let us know what you intend on buying next to replace your 3570k so that we can all buy the preceding chip per the roadmap

2500k

The FX-4300 today can hit 4.8 -5.0 without much trouble and can do quite well in games for a $100 CPU.

Hehehe, it happens.

My luck with less trivial things works out alright

Could be worse, I mean it only costs money, my PC's have still worked well for me (laptops too). My 9550 was actually an overclocking beast (comparatively) so meh.

I really liked my E8400 Wolfdale, OC'd past 4Ghz no problem, was my first chip to do so. Went straight from that to an i5 3570k, which I like, but I doubt it will ever be considered legendary.

Ahh, and as VirtualLarry said, the E2140. Had that before my E8400 and hit 3.1, was pretty sweet

oh well, I guess I'm going to mention my favorite CPUs from the ones I owned, again.
XP 1700+ 1.46GHz could work at 2.2-2.4 easily (faster than the fastest Athlon XP, like the 2800 or 3200+)
E5200 2.5GHz could wok at 3.3-4.0GHz so it could basically compete with a stock e8600 (with 600-700MHz more), while it was I think 1/3 of the price or less.

also, maybe the Xeon X3210 (quad core, 2.1GHz, could work at 3-3.3 without much trouble, it was the same as a q6600 G0)

My first Coppermine was a 500e and oc to 800 then those p3 went downhill.
I loved my first 939 Opterons 1m cache with a xtpe was sweet.
My 930 Nehalem at 4200 was the last chip that was fun to oc.

Yea, another vote for the old Skt 939 Opterons. I picked up a 165 and nice Abit motherboard on the cheap just as AM2 was gathering steam, ran 2.8Ghz reliably, if the house was cool enough I could sometimes get 2.9 out of it. Worked fine until I started chasing Crysis. :S

So, looking at all the i5 2500K users, I should ask: Is it a bad idea for a value-conscious users to build one of these systems today? I know it's still going strong for those of you who already did but, can it still be a value at the current prices? I seriously don't want to continue Daedalus685's legacy of bad luck.

Part of why it was such good value is that it has remained top-notch for a long time- since it's already 2 years old, I'd say its not the same value proposition any more. (Unless you pick one up 2nd-hand.)

Yeah, like a used 2500K and Z68 mobo for less than $200 would be a great value proposition, that is, for people without access to the fabled "Microcenter."

I'm going to be a rebel and say something different. This is going way back, but I always liked the AMD k63+ chips. I upgraded lots of people who had a 300mhz k62 to this mobile cpu and crank the bus speed up to 112 x 5.5 for a blazing 616mhz. I think I paid 50 bucks per cpu that was a huge value back then.

some e2140 pentium dual core cpus could double their clocks. dirt cheap too. i had no idea and so sold mine without even bothering (it was running a secondary system but overclocked would have torched my opteron 165 in the primary).
