When I was a kid, I build the original set then I build 1 million different variations of that set + my blocks.

It was never ending...

I bought the Simpsons home - and it was a blast putting it together. I would love to get the Kwiki Mart one, but, I don't have the space.

If I had a basement and disposable income, I would totally buy every Lego building/home set and build them.

There's no rule that sais you can't use the pieces from a set to build whatever you want. Heck, that's what we did most of the time. There were also books you could buy with plans to build cool things out of whatever you had on hand.

I inherited my Legos from my brother. He had a mix of sets and also big mixed up assortments. Then I'd get kits for Christmas, build them once and then tear them down and throw them in with the big tub that had all the other Legos and save the instructions. A lot of the fun was rummaging through that whole big pile to find the pieces you needed to build that kit again 6 months later.

It was annoying when you'd get stuck and couldn't find that one special piece you needed though. Invariably that was the one that did not get put away and my mother sucked it up in her vacuum. She'd find it a month or two later when emptying it and give it back to me to put away.

when I was a kid, I had a bucket of Legos.

we used our imagination to build stuff.

now you have sets like a Knight's Castle.
follow instructions to build it.

The first Knight's Castle came out in 1984: http://lego.brickinstructions.com/en/lego_instructions/set/6073/Knights_Castle

Sets of Legos have been around for almost 50 years: http://lego.brickinstructions.com/en/showallyears http://brickset.com/browse

Your bucket of Legos probably came from a bunch of sets that were thrown into a bucket together.

I buy Hobbit/Lord of the Rings sets because I'm a huge nerd and my daughter loves putting them together and playing with them.

OP, do you not realize the Lego castle series started in the 70's? I can't help but read your post in a toothless grandpa voice; Back in my day...

I had that first castle, the yellow one. That thing was awesome, and mostly standard pieces. I started to dislike the direction they were taking it when the pieces started getting bigger and more specialized. At one point it seemed like you'd build a Lego castle by putting together two pieces, castle part A and castle part B and you were done.

I did just build the Slave I with my kids though, that had a hell of a lot of pieces And it has a minifig Boba Fett and Han + Han in carbonite. So that's cool with me.

That wasn't the first castle, it was the 375 castle.

I loved that thing, built and re-built it in so many ways.

cuz op hasn't seen The Lego movie.

:whiste: Everything is awesome! Everything is cool when you're part of a team...

Yeah, with Lego you build the thing according to the instructions once, and then you break it down and build something cooler with it.

The only difference now is that maybe you post a picture of the completed set via Instagram or something to the person who bought it for you.

[/b]really?
why?

Because having the intact model sitting there reminds me that I got what I paid for: the pieces AND the instructions.

All the old sets I got as a kid, I took them apart, threw out the instructions, and lost the parts, and they just became spare pieces. Could have paid less for spare pieces. What a waste...

I enjoy the building part of the sets. I mostly buy the vehicles (I have almost all the City trucks, and now I'm getting the licensed super cars ones), but I also have a Minecraft diorama set, and I want the Star Destroyer and SHIELD Helicarrier sets.

This thread reminds me, I have to go put my big X-Wing back together. Off to Brickset for the instructions!

Edit: Set 7191, if anybody is curious.

I would love those, but holy shit, where does one find the space to put those things? I can more than afford them now, which is sad?

I have forced myself to stop buying any more because I just don't have the space to put any more and refuse to take anything apart.

P.S. You NEED to buy these too:

The Creator sets are great too because they use more of the normal pieces/colors and come with instructions for three different models. http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Creator-ByTheme It's a great hybrid since you can build from the instructions for a while, but are still great when you toss them all together in a large bin.

Lego is currently the largest toy company in the world and just surpassed Mattel last year. You don't get that big on just selling buckets of Lego brick. The nature of Lego hasn't changed, they've just greatly expanded with their licensed themes. You can still have the exact same experience as you did when you were a kid, it's just not as popular as Star Wars Lego sets now.

I'm surprised after all these years, no one has choked and died on one.

Actually sounds too good to be true.

If bastards can sue McDonalds for hot coffee, surely some jerk can sue Lego's for selling small pieces of shit to kids.

I have the creative talent of a fish. So growing up I was only able to make the house with the odd colors. I would have loved these as a kid.

My son loves them. I have to get him the Kwik-e-mart for his birthday.
