Legos as a teaching tool

Similar to the kindergarten Crayola thread a few weeks ago.
(Entire article pasted b/c the site is wonky at times.)

Some Seattle school children are being told to be skeptical of private property rights. This lesson is being taught by banning Legos.

A ban was initiated at the Hilltop Children's Center in Seattle. According to an article in the winter 2006-07 issue of "Rethinking Schools" magazine, the teachers at the private school wanted their students to learn that private property ownership is evil.

According to the article, the students had been building an elaborate "Legotown," but it was accidentally demolished. The teachers decided its destruction was an opportunity to explore "the inequities of private ownership." According to the teachers, "Our intention was to promote a contrasting set of values: collectivity, collaboration, resource-sharing, and full democratic participation."

The children were allegedly incorporating into Legotown "their assumptions about ownership and the social power it conveys." These assumptions "mirrored those of a class-based, capitalist society -- a society that we teachers believe to be unjust and oppressive."

They claimed as their role shaping the children's "social and political understandings of ownership and economic equity ... from a perspective of social justice."

So they first explored with the children the issue of ownership. Not all of the students shared the teachers' anathema to private property ownership. "If I buy it, I own it," one child is quoted saying. The teachers then explored with the students concepts of fairness, equity, power, and other issues over a period of several months.

At the end of that time, Legos returned to the classroom after the children agreed to several guiding principles framed by the teachers, including that "All structures are public structures" and "All structures will be standard sizes." The teachers quote the children:

"A house is good because it is a community house."

"We should have equal houses. They should be standard sizes."

"It's important to have the same amount of power as other people over your building."

Given some recent history in Washington state with respect to private property protections, perhaps this should not come as a surprise. Municipal officials in Washington have long known how to condemn one person's private property and sell it to another for the "public use" of private economic development. Even prior to the U.S. Supreme Court's 2005 ruling in Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut, which sanctioned such a use of eminent domain, Washington state officials acting under their state constitution were already proceeding full speed ahead with such transactions.

Officials in Bremerton, for example, condemned a house where a widow had lived for 55 years so her property could be used for a car lot, according to the Institute for Justice. And Seattle successfully condemned nine properties and turned them over to a private developer for retail shops and hotel parking, IJ reports. Attempts to do the same thing in Vancouver (for mixed use development) and Lakewood (for an amusement park) failed for reasons unrelated to property confiscation issues.

The court's ruling in Kelo, however, whetted municipal condemnation appetites even further. The Institute for Justice reports 272 takings for private use are pending or threatened in the state as of last summer. It's unclear if Legos will be targeted. But given what's being taught in some schools, perhaps it's just a matter of time.

Maureen Martin (martin@heartland.org), an attorney, is senior fellow for legal affairs at The Heartland Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Chicago that promotes free-market solutions to social and economic problems.

That's horrible. However, if it is a private school and the parents want that propaganda to be taught to their children, then that's that.

Yeah, that left-wing Supreme Court is really out of touch with reality.
Note this is a Private school, who can teach whatever they want, as long as the parents approve.
Also, consider the source, the Heartland Institute is "Heartland's mission is to discover and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Such solutions include parental choice in education, choice and personal responsibility in health care, market-based approaches to environmental protection, privatization of public services, and deregulation in areas where property rights and markets do a better job than government bureaucracies."
Dr. Milton Friedman calls Heartland "a highly effective libertarian institute."

I call them a collection of libertarian nutjobs. Nice try to make this seem like a liberal/communist plot.

Monied interest = those who pay for the "free market" propaganda to be created and spewed out by "free market" think tanks and similar.

Go read up on the industry, billions spent to spread this ideology for the interests of the very wealthy in order to get the public not to vote in their own interests.

Of *course* they'll use examples whether simplistic children lego stories or examples any homeowner would side with to make their point; the point really helping the ultra wealthy.

You apparently are not too familiar with how propaganda works, falling for it hook line, and sinker here.

You don't like it don't pay for it, that is the capitalist's way. No one is making anyone go there.

It will be interesting to see if any parents vote with their wallets and remove their kids after this episode.

Someone should teach the teachers that ?equal? is public education and that their jobs are reliant on the fact that some people have extra money to spend on fancy places like the one they work at.

WTF are you talking about? From the very site this editorial comes from, the propaganda takes the form of:

Officials in Bremerton, for example, condemned a house where a widow had lived for 55 years so her property could be used for a car lot, according to the Institute for Justice. And Seattle successfully condemned nine properties and turned them over to a private developer for retail shops and hotel parking, IJ reports.

How is taking the side of a widow against a developer "spreading the ideology of the very wealthy?"

I am sick and tired of people like this. They live in a country that is free, based on a capitalism and private ownership with little government intervention.

If they think its so bad and evil they should up and leave. These people wouldn't last one minute in an oppressive regime.

They preach how great communism is. How great the Soviet Union was, the pride of Cuba...they all bow down to the alter of Hugo Chavez. They want to be seen with Kim Jong Il. They called Saddam Hussein friend.

These traitors have no business brainwashing the youth of this country.

I am sick of people like you. The damn near first words out of your belly aching mouth are that they live in a free country. Have you any comprehension at all as to what that means? It means they are totally free to do whatever it is that makes you sick. If you are so damn sick why the hell don't you up and leave? You would fit in perfectly with a repressive government because it's your knee jerk reaction. And why not, it's how YOU were brainwashed.

in spite of the 1st amendment and freedom of speech, the single most important freedom in this country is the freedom to OWN PROPERTY. without having that right, without the individual man owning property, let me ask you, who owns it? this is a terrible lesson for these children. teach them to share, yes. teach them to care, yes. but teach them also the vitrue of earning something and the freedom that comes with it.

San Fransisco, New York, and now Seattle: three cities I definitely wouldn't want my kids to grow up in.

Yup, after we completed the theft of the continent from the natives, we went hog wild on property rights. Who knows better than us about how people are about others' property.

Freedom of speech, the press, and association are far more important to the preservation of liberty than property rights. Sorry.

EDIT: there's a reason that there it's not "life liberty and property" in the declaration of independence you know.

Here's the 'monied interests', the people who pay for groups like:
Maureen Martin (martin@heartland.org), an attorney, is senior fellow for legal affairs at The Heartland Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Chicago that promotes free-market solutions to social and economic problems.

Here is the founder of the Heartland Institute, the source of this propaganda:

David H. Padden is President of Padden & Company Inc., a Chicago-based investment securities firm. He plays a prominent role in a number of right-wing think tanks:

Its first employe:
President and CEO, the Heartland Institute.
Director, officer, and member of the executive committee, State Policy Network. Member, Philadelphia Society.

Bast was Heartland's first employee. He is a prolific writer on a range of subjects, including the environment and global warming. He is a co-author of "Eco-Sanity--A Common Sense Guide to Environmentalism" which argues, among other things, that global warming is not a problem.
