But do people on the left look at books/movies like 1984, THX-1138 and think "hey that seems pretty good!"?

Do they look at whats going on Venezuela today with food shortages and insane inflation and really say "I want to live like that"?

If so then they should be happy there are places they can live like that if they choose to move there.

I live in Minnesota. If I hated it, I could move. But I also don't expect beaches and palm trees.

Because of one private school with different views that happens to be in Seattle? How narrow minded and shallow. I don't necessarily support what they are teaching, but considering it is a private school they can do pretty much anything they want as long as the money flows in. Hell, I wouldn't send my son to a Catholic School for similar reasons, but it doesn't mean I want the Catholic Schools shut down, or I would avoid a town or state that has one or more.

Are you just as bothered by families that take children to church or any other religious activity? Are the religious right traitors to America also for trying to get their ideological agenda pushed down the throats of as many as possible? After all, our country was based on the concept of being a secular nation....not a Christian nation as so many falsely believe.

I'm guessing that, because it falls in line with the indoctrination that you received and find acceptable or even desirable, that that type of brainwashing is just A-Ok.

"Brave New World", though, is a better picture of the oppression we see, where the truth can be freely available, as in the books above, but it's buried in a sea of pleasurable distractions and harmless to power because few will read it.

you're right moonbeam. i think my view, and locke's view, on the importance of property is a valuable lesson for these children. I want these teachers to agree with me. The best way I can defeat them is by compelling them via logic and reason to agree with me. i don't see that happening anytime soon. so, the alernative is to too my best to discredit their view amongst my peers by appealing to their common sense.

I think you are putting the cart before the horse. You are making assumptions I may not share about what is common sense and are prepared to run head long into battle. I am asking that we first see what sense do we have in common? We need to see if perhaps there is some common ground from which we can begin. For example, I asked you if you believe it is good if a child learns to share. Also, I know nothing about Locke, so you are not really saying anything to me when you evoke his name. I know it's convenient short hand, but I don't know the language.

I know how easy it is to go off half-cocked and say stuff one really doesn't mean. If I had to guess my bet is that most of you think charity if good when it's voluntary and not when it is forced. Maybe the ideal is an all voluntary government and maybe everybody who ever tired one is dead so people decided it's better to demand at least some level of donation in exchange for the right to be a part of society. This would sort of tie into the notion that with rights come responsibilities.

I like the idea of a safety net but not when its become a hammock.

Food Stamps is a great idea...but know what upsets me? I worked in a grocery store for a long time and many times people would use them to buy junk food or T-Bone Steaks and Seafood. Oh and the same people would go through and buy cigarettes with cash.

My food stamps heroes? The ladies that would go through with food stamps and coupons. Trying to get the most for the money.

Helping people is an art. They need to be helped in a way that creates self confidence and not dependence or fawning gratitude. Real help makes it possible for people to then better help themselves. Help requires realistic opportunity, education, and emotional transformation. Negative attitude is what makes cripples of people. It is profoundly difficult to change and requires great patience. If you give a bum a million dollars he will be a bum again in no time. Poverty is a mental state but one that is not natural. It has to be acquired and therefore it can be cured.
