Leinart staying at USC

Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart will be back for his senior season at Southern California and try to lead the Trojans to an unprecedented third straight national championship.

The USC quarterback announced his decision Friday, opting to complete his eligibility rather than enter the NFL draft, where he figured to be one of the top selections and become an instant millionaire.

``I realized the opportunity right now to support my family by going to the NFL early, but to me I think college football and this whole atmosphere here and being with my fans and my teammates ... is ultimately more satisfying and will make me happier than any amount of money could make someone happy,'' he said.


There was a roar of approval from a crowd of about 500 students and fans jammed into the foyer at Heritage Hall to hear Leinart's decision.

``OK, so I'm smiling,'' a beaming coach Pete Carroll said after Leinart's announcement.

I admire his loyalty to his team, or his desire to finish college, BUT....

I think that is a terrible decision. What if he blows out his knee next year? Multimillionaire -----> everyday Joe.
What if he has a terrible season next year. First round draft pick ------> mid level pick ---------> lose millions

I think he should have gone pro, but that's just one short guy's opinion.

He probably has a 2-3 million dollar insurance policy. I'm sure he'll be fine.

If he has a bad year, he gets drafted lower and <gasp> has to prove himself at the next level before millions are handed over to him. I highly doubt he'll all of a sudden struggle though in that offense next year.

Yup, he's taking a HUGE chance. His stock is as high right now as it's every going to be and he's missing out. I can understand that he wants to hang out in college yet, who wouldn't want to be the ultimate stud at their college and hang out with your buddies all day. But he could lose a lot of money over this deal.

On the bright side for him, he doesn't get drafted by the niners this year.

It's still a tough choice, why risk an injury that can end your football career? Sure, all your friends and basically the whole school is asking you to stay but they won't be around if something bad happens ... props to him for risking it.

Yup, he's taking a HUGE chance. His stock is as high right now as it's every going to be and he's missing out. There's a lot of reasons to stay at USC but he's at the top of where he could ever be as far as college goes. He risking a lot and has nowhere to go but down. Very gutsy for him to stay another year; I can't say I'd do the same.

Well, no team has ever won 3 consecutive national championships. He also has the chance to become only the 2nd player to win consecutive heismans.

That's why he's getting insurance. The only thing that could hurt him is a poor performance.

He likely has a multimillion dollar insurance policy. Hes just as likely to blow his knee out playing the NFL next year which would result in the same issue.

And besides blowing a knee isnt that bad, their are several running backs that blew a knee in their junior or senior years and have been drafted and are making millions, and will only make more when their contracts are up.

I think he should go, forty niners are today just like when leinhartish Montana took the helm and we all know what happened after that. But hes a class act all the way, maybe naive, believing in things like loyalty, commitment and graduation and the only player to marshall a team to three national championships can't hurt either.

Thank you for saying that. I love how everyone says "Id take the money". Of course we would all want the money..but we arent a QB who has just won the heisman and the NC (split the year before), with a chance to win it again..which has never been done. He says he is happy at USC..it makes sense for him.

But a signing bonus is.

Lloyd's of London would pay him if his NFL was a bust due to injury, but they cannot pay for the potential Super Bowl rings, MVP's, and fame.
