IN 4 1, power consumption 6w idle, 40w max 2s, 20w typ, 3 yr warranty, totally sick of fussing with win based media PC. Only question, should I have bought two, and which drives to put in it, thinking WD Red 3TB.

How does this allow us to avoid Windows? Sorry, I'm just looking into servers and backups and don't fully understand.

Damn, that proves that it's this forum's scripts highjacking links. When I posted this thread, the link was to tigerdirect.com, but I just booted one of my Asus N2830 laptops, using a Linux Mint 17.1 LiveDVD ISO, and logged into AT forums, and went to peruse hot deals, and voila, the link changed to lenovo.com.

So I'm sorry that I accused people of malware, it appears that it is the forum itself changing links.

Please post in the thread in TFI with the details.

I think this system uses a web browser to access the firmware. Kind of like when you log into your router. Very similar anyway. I'm still on the fence. The price is right and most of the reviews are positive but I'm just not sure what I'd do with it.

I was just about to post in another thread where someone had this problem because I had the same issue in one of my other threads and asked about it there. The other post seemed to think I had an issue and I got very concerned because I had had a possible issue a couple weeks prior.

So our computers aren't in any danger from this?

What does post in TFI with the details mean?

TFI is the Technical Forum Issues section of the forums and the thread about this can be found there. I believe the issue has been taken care of.

Thanks. I don't know much about this and am possibly looking into a backup and file server solution. I need to research it obviously and this seems like a good deal, but only 2 drives seems small for this usage.

Well, if you put two 4-6TB HDDs in there, with RAID1 (mirroring) for security, then you can store 4-6TB. $50 for a two-bay device is actually cheap, most are $100-200.

Edit: You'll pay $400+ for a good 4-bay unit. And $700+ for a good 8-bay unit.

400 without drives? That's weird that the price would go up so much from 2-4 drives.

I believe you it's a good deal, just don't know it this works for my needs. That's for a different thread, but I imagine this is just for backups and file sharing and not as an external drive for running off of.

Would probably be great for backups though.

Not really. There's the semi-linear increase in price, from just the SATA controller count and physical bay sizes going up, and then there's the premium that those units charge for being able to support RAID 10, 5, and 6. Something that the 2-bay units don't do. Plus, you need a faster SoC and SATA RAID controller to handle the increased data rate of 4 drives.

Edit: This is probably the cheapest 4-bay NAS at Newegg. Only 3 eggs though. It's from Buffalo. $220 w/some promo code savings on top.

An external HDD is DAS. This box is a NAS. They are different. I think that you need to identify your requirements first, whether you need DAS, a NAS, or dare I say it, a SAN. Those are generally in increasing order of cost and complexity.

Thanks, yes, you're correct. The sale prompted me to get thinking about it, that's all.

Plus I'm doing a new build and there's multiple ways I could go about it as to what stays internal, etc... Just thinking aloud I suppose. Thanks for the help and the other acronyms to look up!

I am tempted to buy a second one they are so cheap, and two should be happy on our small network.

These are DLNA something like that, does that mean various devices like smart TV and DVD players will be able to see two NAS and display files etc?

Anybody else thinking about two, issues pro or con?

hmm...the amazon questions section says that the disks can't be read in another system if the NAS fails. Apparently it uses some kind of linux virtual volume and some people were able to read the disks using linux.

Don't forget this NAS won't be able to saturate a 1Gb network. Max xfer rate is around 35MByte/sec.

About the ability to read the drive then the NAS fails. This is an issue with almost all NAS (as far as I know, they use linux kernel). Back up is the key here.

I do have 2 slow NAS boxes (212P QNAP, about the same speed as this one) which I use for remote backup since my speed is limited by my upload/download anyway. They work great for that.

If you are trying to stream content to many multiple devices you could run into issues. If you only pull from one or two devices at a time you should be good.
