The fastest boxes are what something like 125MB/s other than with huge data moves whats the issue with 35MB?

The speed is very important if you believe in backing up data to or from the NAS. The different is an overnight backup for a whole day backup.

The speed is very important if you believe in backing up data to or from the NAS. The different is an overnight backup for a whole day backup.

Since we are talking TB of files, nothing is "fast". 35MB/s is 126GB/hr, about 8hrs/TB. 125MB/s is 450GB/hr, 2.2 hrs/TB. OTOH something seems to always glitch when I do a big move and I come in the next morning with the system waiting for me to click a dialog box before continuing.

Faster boxes will be a LOT more money.

What that means to me is that I need to exercise some sense when deciding what and how much to transfer at a time.

Anybody have an idea of transfer speed to or from the NAS to a USB attached drive?

Don't forget this NAS won't be able to saturate a 1Gb network. Max xfer rate is around 35MByte/sec.

About the ability to read the drive then the NAS fails. This is an issue with almost all NAS (as far as I know, they use linux kernel). Back up is the key here.

I do have 2 slow NAS boxes (212P QNAP, about the same speed as this one) which I use for remote backup since my speed is limited by my upload/download anyway. They work great for that.

I hate the inability to read the drives in the event of a failure (same problem with storage spaces). So I use Stablebit DrivePool to pool drives of different sizes together (which is awesome), and all the data is readable just like a normal drive. It's easy to add or remove drives from the pool at any time. The only downside is that you need some version of Windows - I'm using WHS 2011, but I need that anyways since I share a scanner, and run various servers on the system (Minecraft, Airvideo, Plex). It's just another way to get a lot of flexible storage - I have 7 drives in my system. There was a hot deal on a Rosewill case that can hold 10 hard drives for $50 recently.

anyone get theirs yet and get it to work?

instructions are really poor.

first i couldn't find it on the network with setup.lenovoemc.com. found the ip in my router and entered that in web browser and it says that it has to configure the disk so I click continue. Nothing happens for awhile so I refresh the page and it shows what I assume is supposed to be the management page but there's like no info. there's power off, restart, and blink lights buttons but they do nothing. i powered it off/on again and still get the same thing. if i try to use the lenovo emc storage manager software it says "setup is required" but I can't figure out how the hell you set it up...
go back to setup.lenovoemc.com and still can;t find the device...

my disk might not be supported. i have a supported 4tb disk on order. i should think i should still be able to access the device itself though?

nm, apparently it doesn't like firefox. opened right away in IE
