Lenovo S10 and Vista

I got my S10 the day before and after running XP Home a little bit I got tired of Lenovo littering their logos everywhere and the seemingly possessed Norton 360 trial I decided to just nuke the entire drive (after making an initial OKR backup disc) and installed Vista Enterprise SP1 on it.

Here's what I observed:

1. Vista recognizes all but three components: the GMA950, Broadcom wireless and an "Unknown Device" (which turned out to be Lenovo's ACPI Energy Management controller). The GMA950 driver can be obtained from Intel directly, while XP versions of broadcom wireless and ACPI controller drivers will work in Vista without a glitch.

2. Fn + direction keys will control brightness and sound volume out of the box, but I have yet to try other Fn key combos and can't seem to find the Fn hotkey utility that was supposedly installed along with Lenovo Energy Management driver.

3. Maybe it's specific to Vista Enterprise, but to turn off hibernation you will have to do the following:
a. find cmd.exe in \Windows\System32 and run as Administrator.
b. type in "powercfg -H off" (without the quotations).

4. Battery life seems to be roughly the same as XP Home. This is with Aero and UAC turned on and screen brightness at maybe ~30-40% full. This is empirical of course and my power setting is on the default Balanced Vista power profile.

5. I yanked out the removable 512MB stick in favor of a Corsair 2GB stick. Vista recognizes that there's 2.5GB of memory installed but can only use 2GB of it. This is due to Atom's inability to address more than 2GB of memory.

6. My S10 seems to run Vista better than it does XP. This may also be due to the lack of bloatware. No tweaks were done to either my Vista system or XP. I did use Anti-Vir instead of Norton 360 in Vista. This empirical observation is made based on running 2GB of memory in both XP and Vista.

Hope that this brief writeup may be helpful to those thinking about moving to Vista (don't suppose there are too many here) or considering buying a S10.

I upgraded my wind to 2gb and am running windows 7 on it. Not a single problem. everything runs very well and responsive. Vista was about the same. The Atom surprises me.

well if you think about it, not many processors these days are heavily taxed. i mean how often will a person be using 100% of a quad core etc? its probably fair to say that most of that horsepower sits idle (unless you game etc), but since nobody will be using a netbook for gaming they do well for what they are built for.
