there was a code on slickdeals where you can use some guy who released his employee number and you can get an extra 15% Employee discount

that makes it extra hot, that is if the guy's number is still active

How come it says R60E has the Radeon available but I can't actually configure one with it?

Thinkpads by Lenovo are not the same quality as the ones under IBM. I just got a T60p and the screen sucks. The lid latch feels too plasticky and the keyboard's not that great either. My older T42p was awesome.

The Chinese (Lenovo) recently bought IBM, e.g. they are IBM now.

As part of the deal, Lenovo allowed the former IBM company to retain the IBM name for the next 5 years for their software.

Put another way, if you see IBM on any hardware, it's Chinese (Lenovo) now.

If you see IBM on software, it's still American for a while.

BTW, don't forget Amex has some kinda discount program for this, it's an extra 5% or 10% off if your amex card qualifies but you gotta sign up.

Very nice deal! I just bought a Z61t not too long ago with a similar deal. I'm very happy with it. The build quality is so much higher than consumer notebooks like HP, dell, etc. If your company (employer) or alumni association has a purchase program with Lenovo you can get another 15% off!

Update: I went and compared prices with and without the employee discount and you don't really get 15% like the ad states on the employee purchase websites. It is more like an additional 5% off. If I was going to actually purchase a notebook I might call and complain to see if I could get the deal. So YMMV!

Anone know if the R series build quality/reliability has improved over the early models? I think I remember reading about issues with the early R series. Or am I just imagining things.

The R series is definitely in my price range.

These laptops have been in this price range for a while. Will Lenovo take an additional 25% off on Memorial day?

They're made in China...

IBM is dead! Lenovo just bought the IBM name/logo to improve their rotten image/products.

Extrapolate!

Lenovo just bought the Thinkpad stuff (and maybe some other notebook-related lines) from IBM. Big Blue was not itself bought by Lenovo ... durr.

Heh!

Close, but no cigar...

Lenovo bought IBM's PC division for $1.75 billion a couple of years ago. That means IBM is out of the computer business and Lenovo is now the number four PC manufacturer in the world.

Lenovo will continue to be the preferred supplier of PCs to IBM and IBM will provide service and support for 5 years to Lenovo PCs. After that, Lenovo will take control of IBM software and support too.

*edit*

Here you go: IBM sells PC group to Lenovo (C/NET - Dec 2004)

Good read!
The two companies plan to form a complex joint venture that will make Lenovo the third-largest PC maker in the world, behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard, but still give IBM a hand in the PC business.
Bwahahahahaha! Stupid Americans!

Now for the rest of the story...

Lenovo Loses One of Its Stars (Wall Street Journal - May 2007)
The company surprised investors by announcing the resignation of Ms. Ma, 54 years old, who had been a top architect of the IBM acquisition...

Lenovo has been aggressively cutting costs, and the rows of empty cubicles in its Raleigh headquarters tell part of the story. Last month, the company announced its second restructuring since the IBM deal with a plan to save $100 million this fiscal year by eliminating or moving 1,400 jobs, or roughly 5% of its global work force. Many of the jobs were moved to Asia from higher-cost locations in the U.S.

"Mary Ma is the person who put Lenovo on the map," said Citigroup analyst Kirk Yang, who views her departure as a significant loss for the company.

"From her perspective, her job is done. They bought IBM and now things are back on track."

Bottom line: IBM is toast!

Little secret- the only one of those that's Lenovo's fault is the lid-latch. There are 3 different manufacturers for the screens and 3 different keyboard manufacturers, each of which are the same people who made the screens and keyboards for the T4x series. They each of different characteristics, moreover, and there's no way to tell ahead of time which one you're getting, with the exception of the FlexView screens.

Big Blue refers to steel: mainframe to minicomputers, which are not PCs. IBM sold it's PC business, but continues to make the larger scaled machines

in a forum like Anandtech, you would expect there won't be as much idiots saying everything made in china = crap. i guess i was wrong.

i mean, look around you, almost all PC components and parts are made in Asia. (China, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, etc).
