Lenovo Y40 best choice for me?

Hey guys,

I've been out of the loop when it comes to laptops and now 'm in the market for a new one. Basically I just wanted a good general Windows laptop for under $1000. Looking for portability(14" max, 13" ideally and a bit on the thin side), some power(discrete gpu) and comfort/usability.

I had an Acer TimelineX 13" 3830TG subultrabook with i5/8GB/GT540m/750GBHDD = $649...this laptop served me well back then and was priced well, but I hated the left shift key with a passion. It was too small, like half the size.

I'm eyeing on the Lenovo Y40 14"- i7/8GB/R9 m275 2GB/ for $879 CAD. I'm not planning to do heavy gaming on it, maybe just some sport games and RC Sim Real Flight 7(mainly). It will also be used for IT work(command lines, linux, cisco routers/switches etc, remote support), virtual machines, and some audio/video editing.

Also I'll be getting my finacee a macbook for Xmas so no need to suggest macs. It looks like the Lenovo Y40 is a good fit for me, but just wanted to know your opinions on this laptop and the company before I pull the trigger or theres any other good alternatives. Thanks!

I was considering the Lenovo y40 also but the cheapest I found was $1000 USD or higher on Lenovo's site, and that's with a dual core i5.

I ended up getting from Eurocom (Canada) a Clevo W230ss for $1088 that came with a QHD 3200x1800 IPS screen, i7-4700m, maxwell 860m, and a hybrid 500gb drive, no OS.

I installed my own windows, swapped out for a msata SSD, and changed the 1x8gb ddr3 1600 stick to 2x4gb ddr3 1866.

Basically what swayed me was that for what I wanted in the y40 I would be getting so much more for the same money.

However if u r just doing light gaming the dual core with HT i7-45xx should be fine.

They also have a dual core with HT QHD for under $1000.

@ringtail: thanks for the link. I like the Asus VivoBook S451LB - i5/GT 740m/8GB for $699 but I cannot find that laptop anywhere locally. And I'm not willing to spend over $1000 for a general Windows laptop. Unless I plan to replace my desktop rig.

@LagunaX: The only reason why I was considering the Y40 because there's a sale going on in the Lenovo Canada website. About $370 off for the i7 configuration, so ended being $879 which I thought was not that bad. I would never buy that laptop for over a grand.

I'm ready to pull the trigger, but I'm hesitating because there maybe a good back-to-school deal. hehe.

Cuz the u get the software u want without preloaded garbage that is annoying!
