Dispatch is a pretty good band. I don't know if they're really unknown or not, I've heard a few of their songs played on the radio before, but no one ever seems to know who they are when I talk about them.

Thursday, and Taking Back Sunday (both Victory Records bands with similar sounds, both f'ing rawk) will remind you why you want to kill yourself.

Something Corporate are pretty good, but every single thing they do is done better by one of the following Vagrant bands.

almost any band on Vagrant Records. (Including: Saves the Day, Get Up Kids, Reggie and the Full Effect, New Amsterdams, Alkaline Trio, Dashboard Confessional, Hey Mercedes, Audio Learning Center, Anniversary, etc)

Mates of State are a guy/girl (husband/wife?) team with organs and drums, awesome harmonies/vocals and just a hint of emo in the lyrics.

The Movielife are an ok pop/punk band, with a lot more punk in that combo than most bands these days. My New Life are great if you want more pop in the combo.

The Rentals (Matt Sharp's band, formerly of Weezer) had a great first album, although their second CD was basically a badly done "The Anniversary" album.

Heading towards the bands in the next-big-thing line, we have The White Stripes, The Hives, and Andrew WK.

Ravi Shankar is great if you're into, er, "substances." So is Tool, but we're talking lesser known people here.

And just for the record, Rufio sucks. Just so everyone knows that.

My neighbors, Little Miss Messy. West Coast rock sound with blues chops without the whiney East Coast lyrics, playing in and around Raleigh-Durham area.

Wonderboy is a pretty snappy tune. There are three other tracks on the site.

And my new favorite hip band, Denali, sounds a lot like Portishead. I know their new album is out in Audiogalaxy (and yes, you can get that to work without spyware).

Hell, yeah! Bela Fleck is well-known in the jazz world, but not so in the so-called "mainstream". That band is one of the best live acts around. Vic Wooten is a bass genius. It's so fun to watch him play that thing like it's an extension of his hands or something.

O.A.R. and Dispatch are fun bands too. Check out another group called VACO--they're pretty similar.

As for what I'm listening to right now... Sigur Ros for one (I appreciate that band more every day), Jeff Buckley (he's a legend, folks), and an up-and-coming singer/songwriter named Ari Hest who's similar in style to John Mayer (except even more jazzy).

bela is a superstar compared to most bands in this thread, but yes, definately the farthest thing from the mainstream you'll ever find. My friends and i bought out the front row of one of his upcoming concerts, i can't wait

ahhhhh looks like no one here listens to celtic type music still i suggest you all listen to Steve Mcdonald he has some VERY good songs- "Celtic Warrior" and "Sons of Somerled" are two of my favorite of his.

Also Rhapsody , good song is "warrior of ice"

Yngwie Malmsteen , good song of his is "i'm a viking"

then there's The Faint , i like this band, kinda techno'ish/devo'ish type stuff
good songs of the faint are - "Worked up so sexual" "Agenda Suicide" "Passives" and "your retro career melted"

Well, since I like alot of finnish bands, they are more or less unknown in USA by default . Some of those bands include:

Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus (somewhat similar to Rammstein. Lyrics in finnish)
Nightwish (this band rules! Go listen to it. NOW!)
