It is the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/remembranceday/

They shall not grow old, as we are left to grow old,

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them. We will remember them.

--Laurence Binyon

The day has different names in different countries, but its purpose is the same everywhere it's observed. Whether called Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Veterans Day, it remains a time to recognize those who fought and to renew our commitment to peace.

To all the veterans, I tip my hat.

Ya, I think that November 11 should be a global holiday because of all the wars and people who sacraficed their lives to fight for a cause.

I am at my public library and everybody stood up for a moment of silence.

I went to the ceremony in my town... 71 people died in World War 1 and 2 from my home town. We also had other secrets near the lake-front...

Just came back from the local rememberance ceremony.
This year, it is more meaningfull to many of us because of the Canadian involvement in Afghanistan.

We will remember them.

To my family members, many of which served and died. I never appreciated what you did until I found all of your belongings.

Including multiple stars from every theatre of war, serving in the Canadian, and British Armies and the New Zealand Navy. You will be missed.

To everyone who ever fought, is currently fighting or will ever fight in a war: Thank you. You are the people who keep people like me, the people you're fighting for, safe.

Dulce Et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!?An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime...
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,?
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori
.

- Wilfred Owen

In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot. ~Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935

At 11:00 I was actually in a Tim Horton's drive thru in Thunder Bay. They stopped orders for 2 minutes. After that I went up to Mount McKay to the memorial there.

I slept right through 11:11 (was up until 6am). However, I made sure to take 2 minutes out for silence when I did wake up before I began typing this.

I think now more than ever it is important to value what they did. Most people in their late teens, 20s and 30s who post on ATOT probably had grandparents involved in the war. These people are (or have) passed away at really high numbers due to their age.

My grandparents all passed away earlier this decade. 3 of 4 of them were involved--maternal grandmother was munitions factory worker, her husband worked on planes (mostly inspected them for quality), and my fathers father was a navigator in a plane near the Bay of Biscay (at least for part of the time).

Its weird watching younger families nearby. None of them really value the sacrifice. The kids today have parents (~40 years old) who had parents that were too young and grandparents that were too old to get involved in the war. Not everyone, but I'm willing to bet a lot of people. They simply never valued it as much as we did--everytime I visited my grandparents from the day I was a child they would tell me about the war and how important it was to remember what was sacrificed.

So much youth was in that war. Guys as young as 16 or 17, and most people probably in their 20s and 30s. My grandparents were all in their 20s. Simply the best generation IMO.

It has taken on a new meaning, Rememberance Day has. While the older vets are going to drop considerably in numbers, we will always remember them--but we remember Afghanistan now too.

I'm a CF reservist...it was a little different for my unit this year for the Rememberance day ceremony...we went back to the Battery's roots, where it was formed in Dundas back in the 1860's.

We usually march past and salute old soldiers, veterans. But it was strange this year...we were saluting our own, NCOs from Hamilton who had served a tour in Afghanistan. One had been badly injured. We had a beer with him afterwards. Kinda a wake up call for us, since I've got a few buddies over in Kandahar Province providing Artillery support.

I almost spit when I saw ads on the TV for "Memorial day sales". WTF is that? Remember those who gave you freedom by getting cheap prices on clothes? I'm glad most people in Canada don't see Rememberance day like that.

Remember the fallen, and those that continue to fall in the sake of Freedom and Peace, and those that risk their life every day to bring it to us.

My nephew returned from his tour of duty in Iraq today, Veterns Day, 2006!

Bless the soldiers who continue to serve around the world, especially those in harms way.

May they all return home safely.

I had to do a presentation on Wilfred Owen back in senior year of high school. I'm grateful to have had the chance to read his poetry. I've never seen anyone describe war in such graphic detail with poetry. Every time I see a movie that seems to glorify war, I think back to his poetry and realize how far off the movie probably is from reality.

Thank you, veterans.
