I would like to have one, but I will never pay $500 for a phone unless Im loaded. I'll wait a couple of years when my 8800 is outdated and then if the price has been lowered and the iphone is still a good product compared to competitors, I'll get one.

One thing I'd worry about is durability. I mean, who in here has a cell phone that has never dropped it before? I usually keep mine in my chest pocket (if I have a shirt on that has one), which it has fallen out of before if I'm bending over (so I usually gotta be wary of it). My current Motorola L2 has been pretty good to me and still works just fine after dropping a couple times.

I'm sure that no matter how awful it may be because of a lack of buttons, apple nerds will still continue to treat it as the second coming of jesus.

And the iPhone automatically switches you to wi-fi from EDGE if there is an available hot spot, you don't have to keep checking. Second, tech writers have done tests and 3G speeds have much greater potential than EDGE speeds, but at the moment it is not that much faster because the 3G towers or whatever they are aren't that great at resource allocation yet. Cingular has also just done a major upgrade to some of its weakest perfoming EDGE towers to get better speeds. No 3G is definitely not a deal breaker for me.

Have you actually tried 3G and EDGE?

Not comparable.

Granted you need to be in a coverage area but the two are not comparable

just because GSM blows doesn't mean all the rest of us want to use inferior technology. no 3G is a deal breaker for me. i've seen the promised land, and i'm definitely not going back.

Well, you haven't said anything that anybody who's interested in this phone already knows. Battery life is 'average'? What is average? How is 'typing' on the iphone with no tactile feedback? What about smudges? How is the NDA person carrying it around? Just in his pocket? Or does he have a holster on his belt for it? If it's in his pocket, how easily does it scratches? Is there a vibrate option? And if so, how strong is it?

It's apple. It's cool. It doesnt matter if the apple is wormy or lacking nutrition as long as the skin looks tasty.

Dont get me wrong, theres a few neat things in there that all phones could use, like the proximity sensor to turn the screen off, the accelerometer to switch portrait/landscape, and the light sensor.

But a touchscreen only interface is a joke. I havent used the iphone, but Ive used enough touchscreen UIs that did more to make me want to throw it against a wall than to actually use it.

Even ignoring all of the techy stuff that most dont care about (3g, etc), the fact that it has an unreplaceable battery is an absolute joke.

A "full page" web browser is also prolifically retarded - thats a massive amount of data to pull over edge, all given to you zoomed out on a screen thats so small you wont be able to read the normal size text. So you'll have to zoom and pan around. Theres a reason no one likes horizontal scrollbars on a webpage..without formatting for the phone youll constantly be scrolling just to read a single sentence - now try that on a phone with just a touchscreen and it'll make me want to punch someone in the face.

And for the record, windows mobile is an even worse disaster in the UI area. But at least it has buttons.

The sidekick is the only phone that really does it right, which has a lot to do with the fact that it DOESNT use a touchscreen. Seriously, the UI is so streamlined and efficient its amazing no one else is copying them. Its too bad its such a limited device in terms of apps. But what is there works absolutely perfectly, and the keyboard is fantastic.

Saw the commercial for the first time on an American channel. Looks cool with so many functions that lots of people wouldn't need/want or pay for... except for high school/junior high kids who think they'll be the sh!t...

You know, I was thinking how good of an idea that sounded when they first released the iPhone. Maybe they could call it the iPhone RAZR lol.

I'm in the same boat. Knowing Apple, it's not worth it to get a first generation product. Not that I own any generation of their products. It does look like a cool phone, I hope it brings the price of all the other phones down, and we see 1 year contracts come back.
