Affleck To Take Backseat At Convention

Actor Ben Affleck will not make a speech at the upcoming Democratic National Convention - because he doesn't want to steal Barack Obama's thunder.

The Pearl Harbor star is set to join a host of celebrities and rallying around the party's presidential candidate at the event in Denver, Colorado next week (beg25Aug08).

But according to the New York Daily News, Affleck has ruled out a high-profile appearance because he doesn't want to hog the limelight.

A source tells the newspaper: "He won't be delivering speeches. Instead, he'll be anteing up for a disabled veterans' poker tournament, as well as participating in America's Second Harvest events - packing lunches for local food banks.

"And he'll be sitting in on a panel discussion on combating global poverty."

Other A-listers reportedly planning to attend the event include filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee, movie stars Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Susan Sarandon, and Forest Whitaker, and rapper Kanye West.

Trying my best not to make this a P&N post but seriously Hollywood, do you think we all care what you think and say?

Yeah, I like actors for what they do--look good and entertain me when I'm bored. That's it. If I wanted a political opinion I'd read civics.

When magazines pay millions for their baby pictures and there are those magazines and tv shows in the first place that talk about nothing but them, yes, they probably think we all care.

Yeah, but only in Chicago can people vote more than once. ('course, S. Florida kinda makes up for it in that many of those can't figure out how to vote once)

That's such a BS quotation, though. American Idol doesn't disallow those under 18 (how many people voting for American Idol are under 18? My guess is, quite a few), illegals, convicted felons, etc. like the Presidential election does. Now add the fact that the same person is allowed to vote multiple times for American Idol (just keep spamming those text messages and keep getting voted) while you vote once for a president. It's a good soundbyte, but the facts behind it don't speak the same volume.

As for the OP, though,

Very sadly, this is 100% true. Modern day America seems to care more about the next American Idol than it's next Leader. We've had it too good for too long. 911 seemingly wasn't enough of a wakeup call. Gas prices and the housing bust don't seem to make a dent either.

The Big Machine's millions of little gears and cogs don't seem to think that anything matters...that it all "will be there in the morning...whatever!" is the right opinion to have.

It's a sad age we live in. I really hope we wake up before it's too late. America needs to be inconvenienced into saving itself, it seems.

eh, minors can vote on American Idol and multiple upon multiple times. i don't think comparing those votes to Presidential elections votes is reasonable.

Exactly. He said in a recent interview " I'm just an actor. Nobody should listen to my opinion and follow it just because I'm in movies". (paraphrased, from memory).

You're right, Mosh; I didn't take into account the "minor vote." But your factoid gets me up on my soapbox about another one of America's problems.

Minors shouldn't be allowed to have such an influence on "America." Sure I remember being a teenager. I also remember that I didn't matter and neither did any of my "activist/pacifist/greenie/meanie/industrialist/communist/jesus/buddah/allah/socialist" friends.

Get my point? If you weren't of "meaningful adult age" you didn't matter. And our country functioned much better back then.

You live at home with your parents and go to school (not YOU, but "you" in a general sense). How do you factor into what happens today? Tomorrow? Maybe. But graduate, get a job and start paying taxes like everyone else, KID, before you start with "I know what's wrong here."

Hope I'm understood.

American Idol is watched by lots of people; most of them don't have any money to buy anything but their parents do. Advertisers know this, so they jack up the price for the "privelage" of showing their commercials. Ads = $$$ for the network. Ergo, "most popular awesome show ever!"

Since when did a brain-dead show like Amercian Idol contribute anything to the collective brain/soul of this great country?

Europe (for example) is full of people that learn to master a musical instrument from childhood. It's normal there. Some 18 year old child that looks good behind a mic stand gets their voice run thru an Eventide Harmonizer once or twice and suddenly they are the focus of the country?

Bullshit. We need to refocus, people.

Aw come on, relax.

American Idol is one giant infomercial for pop music. The voting thingy is just to get people drawn in and feel like they have a stake in their favorite performer so they'll buy their music.

It's not by coincidence that after the winner is chosen they make a big deal about whose record sales are beating whose. More competition - go buy a record and support YOUR favorite.

But I tell you this, if the Presidential election campaign was done over such a short time like AI, I bet the attention would be much more intense. Jeebus, we've been at this one for about a whole year.

Actors are artists and when have artists not held political influence. I don't understand all the bitching.
