Let me just say that going from VIA to SiS solved all my problems ;)

Geez, I don't know what to say. It's Christmas all over again I went from a Duron 800 @ 933MHz on an Abit KT7A-RAID to an 1.4GHz Athlon on a SiS735 board. What a difference that made:

1) Of course Windows XP is MUCH faster now

2) My hard drive scores in HD Tach under XP on the KT133A would never break 40MB/sec. Now they light up to 80 and off the chart.

3) This is what I thought was an ATi problem. I installed the Ati 3226 Win2k drivers on my KT133A system. They would flash and texture tear BADLY in D3D apps. But when I went back to the default XP AIW Radeon drivers, all was well (but no OpenGL support). I chalked it up as crappy ATi drivers. Well, I installed the same drivers on this SiS735 board and the 3226's work just fine

4) Had issues with my iPAQ dropping sync on the USB port. None whatsoever here with the SiS board.

5) Upon hitting shutdown, my computer would not shutdown. It would just restart. Now, it actually shuts down

6) Don't know if I can chalk this up to having a much faster processor (but I heard that it is a VIA specific problem), but when I would watch TV on my AIW Radeon it would stay at a gawd awful 100% CPU utilization at ALL times. I could get no other work done (or even have the TV in a small box) b/c it was hogging so much CPU. Stick the same card in the SiS board and CPU utilization is ~4% (updated)

What can I say, every problem that I had with the VIA board has been solved by the SiS board. I must say that I am VERY impressed

The black PCB looks great in an acryllic case too...

Ah, prophecies do come true.

NFS4, care to speculate what exactly caused "all my problems" in the first place? VIA, of course.

I could say "I told you so", but I'll just allow your comments to add to the glowing praise for the K7S5A, and SiS 735.

Glad that SIS fixed your problem.

Just thought I would add that I would still be unhappy with 30% CPU usage on your TV Card. My old STB desktop TV with Outlook and IE open is only at 8% usage. Makes me wonder about ATI ??

I just wonder why there CPU usage is so High on these other cards. I'm going to hate when I upgrade to WIN XP and have to get rid of this card. No WIN 2K support in fact no support at all now that 3DFX bit the dust.

Budman,

Ture, but the PCChips and Amptron variants are harder to find...so I just assumed... It wouldn't matter anyway since there is already a software program that you can change the FSB with on any Sis735 board...

well I had abit kt7 (VIA) and went to SIS. i have absolutely no blue screen of deaths or any errors in programs in the 2 weeks ive had it now, it took me hours to get VIA up and running correctly (GrBah). I have the ECS SIS mobo..I heartily recommend it to anyone upgrading and not really looking to O/C anyways (at 1.4 ghZ...no matter).

Great board.

Now I have to format my abit kt7 and make a new comp for my sister...going back to 4-in-1 hell.

My ECS K7S5A just arrived 2 days ago. I'm just waiting for my 1.4Ghz Thunderbird to arrive. :frown:

Only problem (for me) is that it only supports 2 DDR DIMMs. I need a gig of RAM (for my Photoshop work) and 512MB sticks are too expensive! :disgust:

I was getting 30% back on my Athlon 600 @ 750 in Windows 2000. I just checked again with my AIW, and CPU utilization was at 4% with the TV on. I must have had some intensive webpage in the background before. VERY impressive

As for which SiS735 board I have, it ain't ECS, PC Chips, or Amtron. And it's been out for a while now

<< 4) Had issues with my iPAQ dropping sync on the USB port. None whatsoever here with the SiS board. >>

Are you using ActiveSync 3.5? If you are, this version fixes the USB port problem -- only if you uninstall the old version, delete all the files, and install the new 3.5 (or you can install AS 3.5 after you do a clean install of Windows) If you just choose to upgrade, for some reasons it's still dropping the USB sync. Just to let you know that this is not VIA's problem.

Go SiS!

I've been using 3.5 since it came out (even after a few clean installed it balks). I'm the iPAQ guy around here so I know just about anything and everything about PocketPC software

Hey.... I had the Abit KT7A RAid also! Then I switched to the ECS K7S5A. Fixed all my Windows 2K problems. Never by a VIA chipset anymore....
