She was probably feeding 10 children, no wonder she can't afford a tip.

The more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. Someone earlier postulated it was a "special" occasion, so the money spent was justified. Fuck that. If you're poor, eat at home. You can buy a cookbook, ultra premium ingredients, fuck it all up, and throw the food away, then make it all again for far less than $140. It's also more special because you put effort into it. There's zero justification for the behavior in the OP.

I usually tip 15% if decent service, less if very poor service.

Sorry, bartenders and waiters do not get sympathy from me for not making 20+/hour. It's not a skilled job and you are not making my day better by bullshitting me to extract a better tip from me.

I'm pretty loose with my tips (15-25+% kind of randomly), but I don't see anything wrong with sticking straight to 15%. I'm agreeing with you just to be explicit; the rest is just my opinion of those who don't. It's built into the system for them to have a livable wage at that and one is just being a scummy human being to go to a restaurant and not tip based on being a cheap ass/want to fight the system. Don't like the system don't eat at one or stick to places where it's explicitly not required. If one can't afford the tip go to somewhere cheaper. This lady could have gone somewhere that cost 90$ for her special occasion (I'm assuming that's the case) and been able to afford the tip.

I dont like tipping barkeeps a huge amount cuz the booze is 10 times what its worth. For that kind of money they should be able to pay a decent salary and just let the man do his job well, no freakin games.

Bartenders get 20% of the servers tips, at least that's how most places do it around here.

I asked the Hooters chicks about it once. Over there the barkeep is supposed to make her own tips. The whole gang pools together and pays the busboy, also the hostess if they have one (which they normally dont).

Waiters are usually one of the most highly paid workers in a restaurant, higher than the chef even. Most take home 40 to 60 K a year after tip here, in really nice places you take home over 100,000 a year. It really is a job to feed a family of 4.

Depends on the bar/restaurant... some go by percent of sales, some percent of tips. Same for busser, food runner, etc. And then the bartenders tip out their barbacks if they have one.

the bartenders don't keep the markup on the alcohol. The salary varies drastically.

I was just trying to make a joke. But just for argument sake, why would she not deserve a break from cooking with such a large family once in awhile? I am sure the waiters would understand.

OK, I think maybe my point keeps getting missed as is a lot of people here.

The biggest argument FOR tipping, is that people need it to survive especially cuz the boss screws them over (mostly since they expect people to get by on tips).
The biggest argument AGAINST tipping (and the one I agree with) is that if the boss is determined to fuck his people over there is NOTHING a freakin customer can do to fix the situation.
The reason I said "should" is because I accept I cant change reality. I was just putting forth my theory as to what makes sense. Booze is retardedly expensive and if management wont share a little of the excess profits with the man pouring it, he is doomed no matter what. I tip what I feel is needed but if bartenders really feel they are getting the shaft they need to unionize or something.

Really? I wouldn't understand. The wait staff may have kids of their own, and they have their own expenses. If you can't afford the WHOLE cost of eating out, you don't go out to eat. She could find a more ethical way of treating herself. Torrent a damned movie. At least nobody loses anything(time or money) in that case.

Automatic percentage based tipping is for people incapable of evaluating if something they have experienced was good or not. In other words, dumb.

Yeah thats my beef. It used to be a tip was earned for special service otherwise you got nothing.

Even more than that, you felt good about giving the tip for good service. Now you feel like you better give 15% or risk getting "the look" from them.

People who are touching and serving my food, I do not want them to be bums, I want to the be happy people making living wages, besides may students (including myself back in the days) pay their bills doing such jobs. If I didn't make $15 or so delivering pizza, I would have spent more time working and not studying.
The point is, since people make that kind of money, people can do stuff that otherwise that could not do, its one of the small things that makes this country a better place to live. And eating out in a proper restaurant is a luxury, so I dont mind paying a little extra and making other people's day a little better.

So is restaurant food, there are atleast 20 restaurant/bars in 4 mile radius from where I live, you know why? because they make that kind of money, the margin is high, labor is cheap, you change the business model, they will close left and right. Small business will shrink and raise unemployment, govt will have to step in and help them out. Is that what you want? well such already exists, many people praised it earlier in this thread, its called Scandinavia
