The heart of the illegal immigrant "problem" is the inability of people to realize that no law and no punishment ever prevented a single crime anywhere. A lifetime of brainwashing has confused you that selling your freedoms will grant you safety and security when in fact the opposite is true. So you think that a few laws and few cops can stop the tide of humanity rushing across the border, fleeing the horrendous economic inequality in Mexico for the opportunity of the US. Good luck. The ONLY solution is to open the border to all comers, slowing them only briefly to screen for criminals and the diseased as they pass through. That way we get them legal, get them protected by law, get them working, and get them paying taxes as soon as possible.
It may sound good in theory, especialy the thing about getting them to pay taxes... but that would devastate the US economy. It would be similar to what happened when the Berlin wall fell... you're having people with less skills and income flooding into a strong economy... there's going to be a huge impact. Except there'll be more hate... both sides of Berlin wanted the wall to come down, and wanted the people to unite. In this case, very few Americans do... and they would really become bitter when Americans feel they're losing their 'American' identity to that of Mexicans.
The problem is that right now, the vast majority of the immigration issues are reactive. It's only once they cross the border, working without paying taxes, protesting in the streets (lol i find that funny for some reason), that the system fails and people are pissed off.
Is a great wall doable? Well, China did it... and that was thousands of years ago, and took hundreds of years to build.
