I've been reading the posts about this issue, and it seems that it has something to do with SB Live or the Detonator drivers. Let's try to solve this one out, seems that MS isn't really interested (I wrote a message to them, had no answer at all).

I have neither and My system won't shut down. I'm forced to reset then power down during the bios screen.

I have:

850 PIII
Geforce 2 (using the drivers that came with xp)
Aureal Vortex 2
and a network card for my DSL

Mirth, anyway, you have a nVidia video card. Maybe this is a hardware-only problem...

Well, I shut it down and it hangs at the "It is now safe to shut down your computer" Screen. I push the power button (I have a soft switch) and nothing happens. Only thing I can do is reset it.

Hmm... This reminds me of a windows 98 problem that was never fixed for some machines. Windows 2000 seems to work fine

If you take a look, there are several posts about people that are using XP and it'll hang up at the shut down screen.

Well, add me to the list of those who are experiencing the same shut down problems. For the life of me I can't figure out what's going on. The shut down was working fine, to the best of my recollection BEFORE I installed Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5.0 -- Specifically the DIRECTCD feature/drivers. I'm not certain that this is causing the problems but I wanna figure out how to resolve this.

I can't shut down my computer (completely power off) by selecting shut down. I have to manually press the power key to my computer.

Running a Dell Dimension, 500P3, 384 Ram and the 2600 (final) build of Win XP.

I have both, but no shut down problems at all.
I once had shut down problem (reboots instead) when I had Direct CD installed.

Viewrule,
It's the Direct CD causing the reboot instead of shut down. Uninstall Direct CD, and it will solve your problem.

Roxio's DirectCD will not even work with W2K SP2 and they have no fix for it. This product has been bug ridden ever since they introduced it. I used to use DirectCD with W98 constantly but with W2K it's a disaster. What's even worse is that Roxio doesn't appear to know what they are doing. Even EZCD is suspect in many cases.

Link, you were absolutely correct and it confirmed my suspicions about DirectCD. I went ahead and uninstalled both Roxio's CD Creating software and DirectCD and amazingly my computer shuts down properly instead of restarting when I select SHUT DOWN. Yahoo.

Thanks for all your help guys. Well, I know what I'm gonna do with Adaptec CD Creator 5.0...

I've had this problem from beta builds of XP. I'm running RC1 right now, and I just installed it on Friday. I hope for the best, and that I won't have this problem. It usually starts occuring maybe after a month or two.

I have shutdown problem on Xp also. it just freezes when it says "windows is shutting down". I don't have sblive but the card that i have is the guillemot maxi muse and that's what's causing it to freeze.

Maybe it has something to do with Roxio's Easy CD. I installed so a friend of mine could burn a .cif image, and later uninstalled, maybe it didn't uninstall everything. Now I use Nero & Fireburner.

Although, if u take a look at the poll, most people who are running into this kind of problem have a SB Live! AND a nVidia-based video card...

I will add another vote for Roxio, I do not have ant SB cards or drivers in my system and my rig has started rebooting instead of shutting down. Come to think of it , was about the time I installed Roxio's software that it started that.

I too have the shutdown problem, or rather Hibernate problem

Sometime (20%) I press my power button to hibernate,

it just say that it is hibernating...............then nothing!

although 80% time is fine????

What is worst is that I can't bring up the TaskManager through Control-ALT-Delete

I have both. I installed the drivers from the Windows Update for the SB Live! X-Gamer, and used the newest Det's (21.xx I think?)

Whoops, forgot to say that shutdown is fine on my computer.
