Did I mention the patriot act?

You may want to look up the RNC 2004 though

No, lets not get rid of the Confederate flag. It represents the original states, which are a part of your history.

And....the General Lee would not be the same without it.

I think you might be the only person in the thread who read the OP I could care less what you want to wear or fly personally. I think it's stupid, but it's your choice. But flying the flag of a defunct rebellion on public institutions is another thing entirely.

You've been watching too much television, I don't think the Patriot Act grants special powers of detention (I could be wrong, however). It DOES, however, grant additional powers of investigation...especially the ability of law enforcement to keep such actions secret. You might not hear about it, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening.

we really dont care what other people think. if we want to fly the flag we will. but the majority of times the flag is flown, it is not for the reasons like whacko tech think it is.

What public institutions are actually still flying the confederate flag? I agree though, it doesn't belong flying over government buildings. Fly it over your own house if you're a rebellious redneck (or whatever).

Youre right, it has nothing to do with it. Its just another one of the dozens of elitist attacks on anyone who is not them.

Its flamebait, as usual.

Typical..

Symbols can acquire new meaning overtime. The confederate flag ****could***
have at one point of time stood for slavery, but now it could simply mean rebellion or regional jingoism.

Besides banning anything is stupid. We should probably laugh the racists them out of society. Remember any evil can outlast persecution, but cannot survive ridicule.

By the way, my room is draped with Swasticas all around. I'am a hindu and it is a very holy symbol to me i.e a I'am not a nai. I get irritated when the EU tries to ban the swastica, all I can say is that we should not burden others with our history.

Remove it from Govt buildings, but allow it anywhere else. I has trnasformed itself from a simple battleflag to an underground icon, and a symbol of pride for the Southern lifestyle. I know of many Southerners who view it (the Conederate Battleflag) like black T-Shirts and black fingernail polish on Goths. It's an identity for those without one.

Next thing we know, waving flags of Osama and praying to allah calling for the destruction of the united states will be legal also.

The South fought to preserve slavery, plain and simple. If some yokel wants it on his Chevy, fine, but it has no business being displayed on or in anything related to state goverment.

And just where do you live that you have seen blacks wearing the confederate flag? I'm curious. I grew up as one of the only whites in the projects around Pittsburgh and I can tell you that I have NEVER seen a black that thought that it was a good idea to where it.

I am now living in Mississippi and I can tell you with even more certainty that the blacks here would rather be dead than where that bastian of KKK pride.

I think that you are full of sh*t and saying this to try to seem like this symbol of racism (not what it was, but what it has become) is acceptable.

It's more of a sign of rebellion and sticking up for what you believe in. I have seen a few black kids where the confederate flag (I'm in VA), but they were "punk kids," who liked to go to shows and rebell against just about everything - including men's pants.

the flag stands for states rights. not racisim. and that flag is as much a part of our history as anything else. so we should not display the american flag because it stands for us takeing land from the native americans? we should never display a flag of the germans, what the hell happened to free speech??????????? some of you are saying that i cant fly it in my own yard. i tell you, you cant display a flag of your fav. foot ball team because i dont like them. but i can display mine. and i resent the negitivity that everyone talkes about the courntry folk, the "red necks" the hicks, these are the true americans that vote, and that produce your food, and do the jobs you would scoff at, and make their own way through life. these people are the ones who make this country run!

Yes, and I wish racism was only part of past history.. but people like to keep it alive and the symbols that represented the states fight to keep their slaves..

Should slavery have been decided by states rights? If a state wanted to keep slaves black or WHITE .. would you be opposed to it?

It stands for states rights in a bad way. It [partially] stands for the southern state's fight for imaginary states rights such as nullification (unconstitutional and an unarguably bad idea).

I would not be bothered too much by racism, BTW I'm an asian. I have spoken to openly racist whites, blacks and Asians as well.

I would consider it a more a problem of maturity rather than one of politics (thank god for that ) People who are truly racists are ignorant.

I would not say they are just white, racists are people who find excuses for their failures.

Currently white racists are a marginalized group, more worthy of being classified as anti social than a distinct world threatening world movement (unlike the Nazis) I think it is time the world stops prosecuting them and start ridiculing them into oblivion. I have also met the racist blacks (and I feel the same way about them)

The racist group which disturbs me the most are Asians, especially the ultra-nationlists chinese and middle-east.

Now that is a group which can potentially spark a world war. I think it is time we stopped argueing over meaningless issues like the confederate flag vs. the union one.

Besides I like the Confederate design over the current Union one

Slightly OT, but indulge me...

When exactly did the Confederate flag become racist and unacceptable for public display? Timeline:

End of Civil War: 1865
Brown v. BOE: 1954
Civil Rights Act: 1964
Dukes of Hazzard (Last repeating appearance of flag I can think of on TV): 1985

Maybe I'm too young, but I don't remember black people protesting over the Confederate flag in the Dukes of Hazzard. It's just been in the last couple of years, right?

I mean, what's changed?

Thank you. This person is obviously ignorant and doesn't understand the whole situation. Just because you have not seen it, it doesn't make it not true. Yes, blacks and all other types of people wear the flag worldwide.
