Lets' say I break into your house....

Got this in an email. Seems to make a good set of points:

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages !!!
It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:

Large demonstrations took place some months ago protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.
Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors.
I've done all the things you don't like to do.
I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:
You are Required to let me stay in your house
You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
You are Required to Educate my kids
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.
It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself.
I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.
Oh yeah,
I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America .....if you agree, pass it on (in English).
Share it if you see the value of it.

If not blow it off......... along with your future Social Security funds, and a lot of other things.

Let's say I kick you out of your own house.

Let's say you're a Native American.

I don't mean to threadcrap or anything. This isn't an argument for either side, just the first thing to pop in my head when I read your post.

Then, on the otherhand, you could look at reality.

You are a peasant farmer.
You do not own the land you farm, you have no access to capital, no credit.
You make enough to get by.
Then your govt signs a free-trade agreement.
Now you have to compete w/ heavily subsidized foreign crops flooding your market.
You can no longer make enough to survive.
If you walk to America, you can earn 100x what you are earning now.
To get a good paying job, all you have to do is break one law, then Americans will be more than happy to hire you.

What would you do?

This argument is pathetic. Now I hate when people make fun of my argument and don't add anything substantial, and I'm sorry for doing that. But really. There are so many angles I could take for a rebuttal that it seems a waste of time. Just a couple short ones..

Is your house known as a "melting pot," where people have broken in and worked and lived happily?

Are you living in a gigantic, gold mansion next to a tiny hut full of starving families, one of which sent their son to break into your house to send food back to the hut?

A house is not a country. See... If I found you in my house I'd probably hold you at gunpoint until the police arrived. (Assuming you didn't do anything to make me feel afraid for my well being... 'Cause then all bets are off)

I agree that II is a huge problem and I don't subscribe to the theory that we need them to pick lettuce and do all the other things that americans "don't want to do." (Another argument for another thread) But you can't compare someone breaking into your house to someone crossing a border. It is NOT the same thing.

Breaking into a home is a violent and intrusive act. Crossing a border for a chance at a better life is hardly that.

Arguments by analogy are always suspect, and this is an especially clear example of why that's true.

In short they think your analogy is ridiculous. Now see if you can get thier addresses and you have it made for life.

I don't think that word means what you think it means. We're saying that the analogy is stupid, as in, one situation is not like the other. So, while I have a hard time getting all worked up about illegal immigration, I wouldn't recommend that the OP break into my house.

Analogy
1. a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based: the analogy between the heart and a pump.

Yep means what I think it means, maybe you were confused??

The analogy presented in the OP is stupid. Home invasion /= Illegal immigration.

And that's your whole problem, isn't it?

You can't differentiate between the two.

It's fairly simple if you use logic, rather than emotion, partisanship or ignorance.

This post is proof of why you should immediately delete any forwarded chain emails you recieve. Failing that, you should certainly not post them on message boards for others to see. It will save you a lot of embarassment. A country is not a house. It's not even close.

Oh, and a lot of the premises that the OP uses to make that stupid analogy are in themselves stupid and incorrect.
