I just ran the tests again(twice, 3 times for avg) to see if I'd stuffed up somehow, but I'm getting at worst case 60% between 25-40FPS and 40% >40FPS. Funny, I asked for this kind of thing to be done with AoE3 Demo. I wanted a comparison between what I have and a 6600GT SLI, and/or a 7800GT or GTX rig. All I got in response was a bunch of people telling me how stupid I was for getting 6600GT SLI etc. When all I wanted was a comparison . I haven't decided which upgrade to take, all I know is I need to up my framerate in that game from low 20's to 40+ as a minimum.

This particular test is in the demo. But for any benchmarking you want to do outside of built in time demos, use fraps. Just google it, download it, install it and run it. It should be pretty self explanatory from there, cause I'm a noob too, and I figured it out.

Hmmm, my results are very similar to his with an X2, which is a bit surprising.

have you got the 81.84 or 81.85 drivers? They use dual core AFAIK. But i think that we are mainly gpu limited at this stage.

Hello everyone,

It seems that my max. is a bit off compared to you guys. If i remember i did run at 1024x768, AF 8x and high quality settings. Game setting are all max.
Vidcard could be at 550/1125 instead of 1100.
But i could missed something so will run the test in a couple of days to check things out.
Keep you posted.

By the way clock for clock in games the Xp is nothing compared to the amd64 there is simply a huge difference.
When i see that the results of Dug777 in his original post is 95 fps max and the amd64's do 85 max. then i think something is wrong.
Simple fact is that the fps on amd64 must be higher then on XP.
I had an xp2500+ overclocked to 2250 mhz but the amd64 is much better

You ran@8x6, that was the problem. I just kept all settings but reduced to 8x6 and our numbers are suddenly inline with each other

F.E.A.R., @10x7 with all the eye candy on, is too much for a 128mb 6600GT.

I'd suggest trying 8x6 with the XPs and see if that creates a larger gap in performance. If not, then even@8x6 with max settings minus Soft Shadows, the 6600GT is likely the bottleneck.

I have the 6800NU 256MB PCIe , this is about identical to 6600GT in terms of performance.

My specs:
Pentium 3.4EE (extreme embarrassment), 1.5 Gb Corsair Value, 80Gb SATA drive, geforce 6800NU drivers 77.72.

The mobile celeron has similar results. Either the CPU is not a big factor or i need to try drivers 78.01.

It looks like ass imo at 8x6, and with such a small gain in performance (to my eye the demo was not noticeably smoother) i'm sticking to 1024...where i'm not hugely cpu bound. Seems like it's the sweet spot for my Axp rig, cpu and gfx card both maxed out.

A bit off topic, i get a noticeable stutter when you move from the gunfight through to the water room, both at 1024 and at 800...maybe that's because i only have 1 gb of ram?

EDIT: my 1280x960 scores for good measure (no other settings changed).

Alright, I ran the benchmark myself, and Dug requested that I post my results here for comparison even though I've got a different video card

My system is a 2.4GHz Athlon XP T-Bred B (219x11), dual channel PC3200 RAM (11-2-2-2), 6800GT @ Ultra (400/1100)..other details can be found in the rig link in my sig if you care.

800x600, average of my last 3 runs (all of these results were using the same settings that Dug specified in the OP)

Min 24.7FPS
Avg 76FPS
Max 201FPS

0.3%<25FPS
12.7% 25-40FPS
87%>40FPS

1024x768, average of three runs

Min 31FPS
Avg 59.7FPS
Max 138.7FPS

0%<25FPS
23% 25-40FPS
77% >40FPS

And finally, 1280x960 (again, average of three runs)

Min 19FPS
Avg 44FPS
Max 96.7FPS

4.3%<25FPS
46.7% 25-40FPS
49%>40FPS

Edit: For completeness, I also ran it a few times with the drivers on Quality instead of High Quality, and not surprisingly the numbers were a bit higher:

1024x768 32/66/145/0%/11%/89%
1280x960 19/47/99/3%/42%/55%

I got the exact same thing, at the same place (and also at one specific point when you're leaving the water room and about to knock over the boxes). I didn't think to check my RAM usage during the benchmarking, but it happened at all resolutions, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were a lack of RAM thing...

Well, you could be right, but I noticed no stuttering at all during that benchmark Demo(just watched it a few more times). I do have 2 gig of RAM.

It does look much worse at 800x600. And yeah that is a beastly OC on the Leadtek.

I have SLI'd 6600GT's on a 3500+ @stock w/ 1GB (2x512MB) OCZ EL Plat. Rev. 2 @ 2-2-2-6.
I get the following:
Min: 30
Avg: 58
Max: 145

0% <25FPS
13% 25-40FPS
87% >40FPS

EDIT=====
OC'd the GT's to 583/1.16 and got:
Min: 31
Avg: 65
Max: 166

0% <25FPS
11% 25-40FPS
89% >40FPS

Not much significantly changed but the max FPS (+21 - likely during the empty hallway scene). It did seem to flow a little smoother, tho. I guess the +7 avg. FPS helped out a bit.

That sounds about right then - Dug and I both have "only" 1GB of RAM.

Your results look almost exactly like mine (which makes sense, since SLI 6600GT's are more or less equal to a 6800GT/Ultra)

Mate, is there any way you could run some fraps benches of AoE3 demo 1.1 with your system. If I got another 6600GT I would have a very similar set up to you, and I'm finding it hard to get a gauge on the added performance I'll get. You can D/load the demo here..

https://forum.agecommunity.com/ibb/posts.aspx?postID=18679

I made a thread similar to this one here....

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1717239&enterthread=y

I understand it's asking alot, but you might enjoy the game, you never know

Let me try that out. That's a game a buddy of mine has been looking at and is trying to decide between one or two GT's.

Hey Dug, I know this might sound kinda stupid but how the heck do you measure and record you frame rates?
