I figure I'll contribute. Here's one of my daughter taken 5 days ago. White paper background, 48" octobox with ALIENBEES B800 to her right, silver reflector to her left, D7100, 30mm/5.6. PP'd in LR, then moved to PS to clone out a lot of drool on her chin, then moved to the newly free Silver Efex to convert to B&W. It's technically a light sepia, I brought up the structure to give it some texture, then gave it a white vignette (which I'm not sure I like).

That's a great portrait, one any parent would be super proud to have.

But.

On the left side of her face (our right), the edge of her face/neck/shoulder seems to have a hot-white selection running down it. Is that the reflector playing tricks on me?

It is not, no tricks. I hadn't noticed it before you pointed it out, so I went back and looked at the original. Turns out I did an increased exposure mask on her left because she was turned too far away from the softbox during the shot. I typically turn on a fair amount of feathering to help blend in the edges on my poor masking skills.

That feathering is what you're seeing "lit up" along the side, I just overshot the edges with my mask. You'll notice some along her left shoulder as well.

Good eye, thanks for pointing that out, something I'll have to keep in mind. On the color version, it's nowhere near as noticeable, but converting to black and white emphasizes it.

How's it look if you just raise the overall shadows to brighten up the camera right side of her face instead of exposure brushes and masks? Personally, it's such a hard task to make masks look natural that I avoid them when possible, and some light falloff to the camera right is a natural look with the main light being on the left.

Adjusting the curves probably is what I should be going for instead of increasing overall exposure. I'll hop in tonight and change the shadows but leave the mask as-is, and see if that gets rid of the problem.

Great shot! Well lit, nice shallow DoF, good editing and color balance, and pleasing composition... gorgeous girl doesn't hurt either!

Thanks dude. I hated the lighting at the place and my off camera lighting wasn't working for some reason. Took a lot of editing for that one and that's why there's so much noise in it. And you're right...she was HOT, so that helped

Her elbows aren't even that pointy!! ()

HAHA!
