Kobe having surgery today, Out 6-9 months which puts him back at start of next season.
6-9 months perhaps for someone who hasn't played 17 seasons already. He has too much mileage to recover that quickly. It isn't a matter of determination or grit, people's bodies just work differently after 30 and that just accelerates each year.
An achilles injury in basketball is a pretty serious matter, and at the age of 35 with his physical skillset already in major decline it could be the end for Kobe. The best case scenario timewise is that he will be back playing after the all star break but he will be a shell of his former self.
Since he will likely be out the majority of next season, if not all of it, does LA amnesty him? The amnesty would save them roughly $80 after luxury tax. Not bad savings for someone who isn't likely to play a meaningful part of the season for them.
