Similar feel minus the persistant mental illness/drug themes of The Wall

I saw a documentary not to long ago. Apparently David Gilmour is somewhat embarresed by The Wall, but it's largely about mental illness inspired by the psychosis of former band member Sid Barret.

I've got a little black book with my poems in
Got a bag, and a toothbrush and a comb
When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone.

He shouldn't feel embarrased by The Wall. It is a masterpiece.

HAHAHAHA. YEah right. Tool's shows are a rip-off of PF if anything. Their shows aren't really that similar. The only similarity is the use of a big screen to show wacked images. PF was doing it long before Tool was every thought of. I Love Tool (don't care for the last album, but the first 3 were amazing). The thing that gets me about tool is they are trying to overplay this whole "dark, we're against organized religion, we like wack things" BS. It's just a selling point to try and make young kids think they are "Different" so they can sell an image. Their shows are still amazing though, seen them 3 times.

Love The Wall, just wish the album had the first song from the movie on it (When the Tigers Broke Free).

this past fall, we had a pink floyd tribute band come and play at my school. it was my student orginizaion that booked the tribute band "wish you were here" there were absoutly awesome, they put on the entire wall show, with clips from the movie projected once the wall was built.

even though it was a tribute band, it was as close as i will ever get to seeing the greatest band of all time

My favourite Pink Floyd album is "Obscured by Clouds" followed closely by the Final Cut.

The Final Cut is all Roger Waters, though Gilmour's guitar work on some of the tracks is outstanding as well. Great album about post WWII England and the death of Water's father in the war. It was around this time (1982) that Pink Floyd split up... creative differences are most often cited (though there must have been personal issues too). The Final Cut was more of Waters telling the others what to play than a cohesive effort.

Waters went on to do some fine solo work (Pros and Cons of Hitchiking for example), and Gilmour carried Pink Floyd for a few more years.

It was Waters, Gilmour, Mason and Wright that made Pink Floyd what they were. They were one of those bands that could never be the same if even one member was replaced.

no, no, no - "empty spaces" is the name of the track.

As you can tell, I don't know the tracks of The Wall by heart. I'll finish eating my other foot now.

The whole Wizard of Oz deal, was that a strange coincedence?

During the late sixties and early seventies that was Pink Floyds thing. They loved to F*ck with you mind. You would be left wonding if anything was done deliberatley or if it was a coincidence. It's hard to blieve that they would take the time to script an album to fit an old movie, but...maybe.

The heartbeat thing in Dark Side Of The Moon. It's supposed to be there throughout the whole album. Deliberately weird.

One of the pictures in "A Nice Pair" has the Dark Side Of The Moon cover. That was prior to the album being released.

Then there is the naked girl behind the red cloth floating in the air from "Wish You Were Here" (inside sleave). Is it really a naked girl, or is it just an illusion? If you look hard enough it's a naked woman. But they, the band, never made any reference to it.

great band

I also love the line, "Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"

I picked up David's new DVD and it is great! He looks a bit chubby, but its cool. I would buy Roger's "Flickering Flame" but it says it won't work on a PC. :|:|:| Oh well, their loss. I love all of their albums, I got the Shine On Box set and it is the best thing I did! I'm looking forward to P.U.L.S.E on DVD, anyone heard of a release date?THIS is my favorite Pink Floyd website. It has some demos of The Wall when they had different lyrics and just the outlines of the songs, very interesting and very cool. Plus, see sig.

Ah... Floyd. Definitely one of the best bands ever, they pioneered a whole new genre. David Gilmour is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. My fav albums from them are their 4 from 73-79 (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall). Just thinking of the counter-melody guitar solo on the 2nd half of Another Brick in the Wall Part One (edit: starts at 2:04) causes shivers to run down my spine...

Bah....those have been their weakest efforts. Their not bad, but they certainly are lacking compared to the earlier albums. To me Final Cut was the last of the really good stuff.

Meddle
Atom Heart Mother
Ummagumma
Animals

.....is some of the real quality stuff that people don't pay near enough attention to.

Maybe I'm wrong because none of the other die hard Floyd fans have said this, but isn't The Wall supposed to be one whole story? IIRC, it's about a young rock star named Pink Floyd who starts off half normal, but then goes insane. Is There Anybody Out There is supposed to be him at the height of his insanity, and Comfortably Numb is about him being all drugged up in the mental asylum. I guess if it was about one drug, it'd be about whatever they give you in there (Valium or something). He also has some random thoughts about this girl I think, and it ends with him being Outside the Wall.

Track 1 - In the Flesh? - Sorta normal here really, but hinting at something to come...

"So Ya
thought ya
might like to go to the show
to feel the warm thrill of confusion
that space cadet glow
Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you'd like to find out what's behind these cold eyes
you'll just have to claw your way through the disguise"

Track 10 - One of My Turns - He's kinda crazy here

"And I can feel one of my turns coming on
I feel cold as a razor blade tight as a tourniquet
dry as a funeral drum

Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left
you'll find my favourite axe
Don't look so frightened
this is just a passing phase
Just one of my bad days
Would you like to watch TV
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would you like to see me try?
Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

Track 13 - Goodbye Cruel World - Okay, he's messed up to the point of suicide now

"Goodbye cruel world
I'm leaving you today
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

Goodbye all you people
There's nothing you can say
To make me change my mind
Goodbye"

Track 15 - Is There Anybody Out There? - And he's about as fux0r3d as you can get

Track 19 - Comfortably Numb - I'll refrain from posting all the lyrics as they're pretty famous, and I'm sure most of you know them. He's in a drug induced haze at some mental asylum

"...I Can ease your pain
and get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts ..." The doctor asking him questions

"...OK
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaaah!
but you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good..." Doctor drugging him up

Track 24 - Stop - He's realizing where he is and what's going on

"Stop!
I wanna go home
Take off this uniform and leave the show
And I'm waiting in this cell
Because I have to know
have I been guilty all this time?"

Track 25 - The Trial - Trying to talk to the head doctor guy to get himself released

"...The evidence before the court is incontrovertible
There's no need for the jury to retire
In all my years of judging
I have never heard before
of someone more deserving
the full penalty of law
The way you made them suffer
Your exquisite wife and mother
fills me with the urge to defecate
Since, my friend you have revealed
your deepest fear
I sentence you to be exposed
before you peers
Tear down the wall
Tear down the wall"

... And the final track is called Outside the Wall

I hope I didn't totally mess this up.

Does anyone here have an MP3 of David Gilmour's There's No Way Out Of Here?

I love that song, and wish I had a copy... I haven't heard it in ages...

Animals: amazing psychedelic album, extremely psychedelic

No one mentioned Time or Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I can listen to these forever.

If I would have a chance to go back in time and see the Wall Live... I would spend all my money on that concert.

My father told me about his Pink Floyd experience when he was young.. He had the Dark Side album on tape (those huge tapes) not sure of the name hehe. He told me that he listened to it on a Sunday and spent almost the whole day listening to the album over and over and over again. On the 18th repeat the tape snapped and the player broke. He said he spent over 12 hrs doing this non-stop. This is crazy :Q . That's what PF does to you.
