Freaking everyone drives a BMW these days. Go with something else - the GS300 is a bit underpowered though.

Sure those cars would be fun to drive Ravenpilot, but they weren't on z0mb13's list of suggestions.

BMW over Lexus any day, though you may want to check out a Chrysler300M if you are interested in saving some money.

I love BMW 5-series, but why buy it at this time? It will soon be replaced by new generation. If I were you, I would wait til the new ones come out otherwise, I would go with 330. YEAH! NO LEXUS FOR ME!

If you want the most fun, get a BMW 530i with a 5-speed. They are so tight!

BMW 5s and Lexus GSs are so common, that I think both have the same level of "flash factor." Meaning, a woman would turn her head equally as much for both cars.

The Lexus, however, would be in the shop less and you would probably have a better buying experience with Lexus. I test drove an IS300 last week, and the day after I received a letter from the salesman, thanking me for visiting. During the test drive, there was no talk of purchasing at all; I just asked if I could drive it, gave him me license, and he handed me the keys. They gave me a good impression.

The BMW might be more fun to drive, but you wouldn\'t get to drive it much, it would be at the mechanic\'s being repaired quite a lot.

Give me a Lexus. Any day. Please.

The GS300 is lacking power to compete with the 5 series though. GS430 is a different story...but thats also 10K more....
Personally, I go with the 330 for a weekend blast, but that blasted thing is too impractical for daily commuting with 4 people

You make it sound like a Ferrari! That is not the case. Both the BMW 5 and Lexus GS are "recommended" by Consumer Reports. Yes, chances are the Lexus would spend less time in the shop than the BMW, but neither would be in that often. Both would be equally as expensive to maintain.

I can speak from experience.

I've got both.

I currently have a 99 GS300 and a 95 325i (5 speed).

I like both cars for different reasons.

The GS is a great luxury car that can move when it needs to. I always drive the GS when I have to go on a longer trip. It is so comfortable and quiet. One example, I was driving from the airport with 3 other passengers when my wife said to me did you see the look on that Corvette driver's face? I was like no why? Then I looked down and I was going about 100 mph without even noticing. It was that quiet. The Lexus also has a lot of little things in it that are very thoughtful. For example, when flipping through radio stations, if you press the same channel button twice, there is no pause in the sound. My BMW's radio has a 1-2 second gap if you do that. It's nothing major but little things like that that are well thought out.

The BMW is a blast to drive. But definitely not as luxurious. I don't like the layout of the console or the seats. The car is noisier but not in a bad way. When I go 85 mph I can definitely hear it. There have also been lots of little things that have gone wrong with the car like bulbs popping (same lights too), doors and trunk don't close nicely, squeaking and rattles (but in it's defense, nothing major. My Lexus has a transmission problem right now I have to take a look at).

If I were you, I probably wouldn't get either the GS or the 5. The 5 I definitely wouldn't get because they are changing the model next year. The GS I wouldn't get because I think it is kind of dated now and there are some better cars you can get like the G35.

Edit: The GS is no slug. It can hustle when it needs to but it only comes in auto so that holds it back. It's no Corvette but 220 horsies (225 on mine) aren't bad.

BMW.

Doggiedog: To my knowledge, the sound-proofing of the 5-series beemer was significantly improved when it got it's face-lift, so the noise-issue isn't propably valid with the current model.

EDIT2: Ooops, you were talking about 3-series beemer, not 5. My mistake

Sorry but you cannot compare a 95 BMW (7 years old) to a brand new BMW 5 series. They've really improved on them lately and are wonderful cars. I know someone who's daily driver is a 530 and it's an awesome car. It's not as "plush" as the lexus or infinity...because it's a european car...but it's still a great car overall. The driving experience is what really matters with the 530. Theres nothing wrong with Lexus though, the GS300 is a nice car in its own rights! I've just never driven one, only driven a 530. Loved it

BMW for performance
Lexus for luxury

i would have to agree that the BMW is more fun to drive than any other car I've driven although I haven't driven that Lexus. There is something about the handling and the transmission-- its truly a unique experience.

My friend has a 528.

I have ridden it many times. I still don't like the interior. I don't know how much the 530s have changed, I do like the new HIDs and taillights, but the general feel of the car most likely hasn't. BMWs are great driving cars with luxury and Lexus are great luxury cars with ok driving. That is what I stated. I don't think that going by my long term experience with both cars, even if it is with a 7 YO BMW, should make me incorrect.

Edit: I say you should save yourself $10K and get a loaded G35. The 530s are quite expensive. Even more than the GS300. Plus the 5 has been out so long when the new 5 comes out next year, it'll look very dated.
