i'm also looking into buying a new car and i've done my research on the g35.

just on looks alone, i would definately go with the G35 hands down.
i do admit that the lexus has a brand name logo which gives the vote to the is300, but what's wrong with infiniti? i have never heard of anything wrongs with these cars and they are a sister group of nissan which also last as long as toyota's.

also in performance, g35 crushes the is300. you're comparing 275hp to 215hp. that extra 60hp could give you the extra push you need along with the larger torque to give you the ability to use the extra hp. since we're looking at about the same price, i would go with the G35.

you wont find a G35 in the same price range as the IS300 for awhile. The markup is going to be big.

Eh Chrysler, both they are huge POS.

My best friends parents purchased an new Chrysler LHS about 2-3 years ago. OMG the problems they had are pathetic. They had to have the transmission replaced 3 times before 40k. How the hell can you explain 3 brand new transmissions going out on a brand new car?

Also the piece where the sidebag is on the passenger side started to warp because of the sun. It folded upwards on the ends and looked horrible.

The other day me and 2 co-workers went to a lot to look at an Acura TypeS 3.2 and there was an 300M. Both of them said the 300M are nothing but trouble and to stay the hell away from Chrysler. One of them owned a Chrysler Concord and he had nothing but problems with it. I dont know what they were specifically, but he got rid of it as soon as he could and purchased a Volvo S70 (turbo)...a nice ride in itself!

Thats enough reason for me to never even look at a Chrysler.

I like the exterior styling of the IS300 more than the G35. But I like the interior of the G35 more than the IS300. Auto vs. auto, the G35 destroys the IS300. I'd pick the G35.

they are both fine cars and I'd take either one in a heartbeat but since lexus is proven I'd go for that

Exactly what happened to my BMW years ago - OK it wasn't the transmission - it was the timing chain which broke & seized the engine and the car was finally totaled. (this was a 4 year old car with abt 45,000 miles on the clock) I've never looked at a beemer ever since.

Doesn't BMW have a 4 year/50,000 bumper to bumper warranty???

I would take the IS300 over the G35.

Of course, if you can, get the SC320.

IMHO, you're comparing a ricer (IS300) with a decent performance sedan (G35). If the IS had respectable horsepower, it would be a different story.

On a side note, does anyone know what infinitiy's web address is? I searched for it the other day and never could find it. I was hoping it would be linked off www.nissandriven.com, but no luck.

G35 is a far better car.. as for the 300M knocking.. the car didn't win awards for nothing... it's actually quite an awesome car with a great engine for domestics.. i'd pay to see another domestic company make as good of an engineered and refined engine as in the 300M.

G35 !

The G35 Coupe will outperform the IS300 in every category, and it's cheaper to boot!

And I still stand by my statement of it being a girls car. I see a lot of them in downtown Toronto and most are in fact driven by girls.

The Ford SVT Contour's 2.5 Litre Duratec was listed in the world's top 10 engines every year the car was available.

Had to make this decision a month ago...(with the g35 sedan)
the sedan looked real ugly from the rear in person...kinda like a kia rio on steroids kinda look
very narrow, a lot higher up than i thought it would be...
but the performance really drew me in...but i went with the Lexus mainly because you can't get the g35 with simple options...
if you want leather, they'll throw something else at you, then you're gonna NEED the sunroof, then the audio, then this etc etc...
if you get the "aero kit w/o spoiler" they REQUIRE you to get a rear spoiler separately...i dont' get it...
but if you get "aero kit w/spoiler" its cheaper...hmmmmmmm
seems like nissan does a lot of that too...smart business-wise i guess..but scared me and my budget too much...

You can't get the G35 in a manual tranny?

I wish I could take back my vote. A Kia Sephia or any other manual is a better car. X off another car from my list.

You can't get it with a manual tranny yet.

A six-speed manual is going to be offered shortly.

I definitely wish you luck, but I have known three separate people who bought Chrysler Concordes or 300Ms within the past three years, and they all had major problems early in the car's life. Two of the three needed transmission replacements, and all three had a variety of smaller but still serious problems (like failed window motors, frozen door locks, interior pieces falling off, etc.). This was all within the first 30,000 miles.

I think this is a real shame - Chrysler is designing some very handsome cars, but I have never heard anything to indicate their reliability is even average, much less good or better. If I were in your shoes, I would take a long, hard look at the G35, which is large and very spacious, and should be many times more reliable than a 300M.

The G35 & Acura TL-S are defined as mid size cars whereas the 300M is a full size car (from edmunds.com). That makes a difference in my book. As I posted earlier I enjoyed driving the 300M (drove a rented one for nearly 1000 miles) and I suspect the awards it keeps winning are due to that sporty feel. The Acura seemed positively bland in comparison. There?s 2 ways to look at a car: 1. as a means of getting to your destination, and 2. the journey is as significant as the destination. I guess I subscribe to the latter and perhaps that?s why its appeals to me. However, shall take your advice and look at the G35 before deciding.

If only Chrysler?s design could build in Daimler?s reliability you?d have a hands down winner. I am aware of the reliability reports on Chrysler products but the newer models are also reportedly getting better. Since I don't plan to keep the car forever, I?ll take my chances.

BTW reliability is also a function of how well you maintain your vehicle.

So did you take good care of your BMW?

What you just said sounds like a contradiction. You say your BMW broke its timing chain and trashed itself but was that preventable even if you took excellent care of your car? I don't think so. I think it was either just random bad luck or poor quality parts.

Yes I tried to maintain it properly and it was just bad luck that it blew. If I recall correctly the timing chain was scheduled for replacement at 50,000 miles and had it reached that mileage I would have replaced it.

This happened in the early nineties and they didn?t have a 4 year warranty ? that was the age of 3yr/36,000 so I was SOL. The damage was extensive and the insurance decided to hand me a check.

Another case: A colleague at work bought a BMW 318 in 2000 and last year BMW decided to replace it as they just could not rectify all the faults, including transmission (manual), aircon, brakes ? talk about a lemon! As compensation they gave him a 535 for $2000 more than the trade in and this car has worked fine. No doubt BMW is good on customer care. While I agree these many be isolated bad pieces, can you blame for me staying away from a beemer?

Thanks all for your comments. I didn?t mean to distract from the main discussion on the G35 & IS300.

hey all...this is the brother trying to decide which car he wants...
I agree that the G35's numbers are higher in performance than the IS300, but what I am looking for is the overall quality, fit n' finish and completeness of what I think a luxury sport sedan/coupe should have. A car of this criteriae should have the amenities and ambience of a luxury as well as a sporty performance. The IS300 has the G35 beat in luxury...it's a quieter car, it has a better looking interior, a superior fit n' finish (Nissan sucks at this) and it feels sportier inside than the current G35. The infiniti may have the horsepower and al that, but the IS300 has plenty of 'sport' to play around with, has a tighter chasis, it's got a very agressive stance that few other cars have, etc, etc.

The IS wins in style, luxury, quality, and it has a good rep behind it. The infinity has good, yet kinda bland styling, the interior is too far towards the luxury side, but it does have more horsepower.
Basiclly, what I am trying to say is that numbers do not make a great car. It's all about the complete package. Personally I am still going towards the IS300.
