the included sw isn't a ripper...

True, I guess I didn't pose my question very well. Ripping software can be picked up free without much issue. So with that out of the equation...looking at this drive for $80 that includes blu-ray playback software (which is normally not free) is it a better deal to pick up a $40 BR player and then buy powerDVD or Total Media Theater as your playback software?

Don't mean to be a burdon on the thread, but I'm building a new rig:

1) Primary interest is playing BDs well since this PC will be used in a HT room - will this player do that well?

2) Is a BD burner mean it burns standard DVDs, BDs, or both?

It burns CD, DVD and Blu-Ray disks. I love mine. Got for the same price just before Thanksgiving.Works great with free or almost free software like Image Burn and BD Rebuilder. Also AnyDVD comes in handy.

Can't comment as I don't own it, but it seems to get good reviews at Newegg. I usually take these with a grain of salt, but its generally a good indicator of a good/bad product.

This particular burner will burn both BR, DVD, & CD. Speeds are posted on Newegg for each media type.

I understand this is a great price, but I'm still hemming and hawing over it considering I'll really only use it as a reader for the most part. I do like the idea of having the burning there in the future and really only need one drive, so buying a read-only for 40$ doesn't make much sense for me.

I haven't followed prices of these burner drives too closely. Anyone have speculation on where these drives will be price in say 3 months? ~$50? are the falling that quickly?

I think it's unlikely to fall as dramatically as DVD writers because there's a rather stiff patent licensing fee on bluray, but it will fall given sufficient time. Myself I tend to think you (might) get a better product just because the profit margin isn't quite razor thin (yet.)

Waiting may not reduce the price any in the near future, but writing speeds might go up...

Active again! Must be a great drive. It has more reviews than any (BR) model on the site. In for 1. Appears you can flash this to retail firmware? Anyone have light to shed?

how is bd media comparable to dvd media? For instance, certain brands of dvd media are quite inferior to others, is it any different for bluray?

Anyone care to recommend a 50gb BD media on the "cheap"?
I've burned dvd on this very burner but not yet use it on BD media.

So tempted to get one of these just to have a BRD drive in my system, but I still can't justify it to myself .. I'd never watch a BRD on my computer. Great deal though. Maybe one day when I put together a serious HTPC.

Anyone know if you can use MediaCodeSpeedEdit to remove riplock? Reading mixed reports with MCSE and the WH10LS30 firmware

Does this have any software to burn blu ray discs?
I want to use the burner more than the 3d playing blu ray software...

thanks in advance

I wouldn't trust Memorex blank media. Their dvd-rs are sub-mediocre at best. I'm trying to get through a stack using them on totally unimportant uses and erase my memory of my mistake of buying them because Sam's Club no longer carries Verbatim.

^This is my experience w/Memorex blank DVD-DLs as well. I've had much better luck w/TDK DVD-DLs (50+ burns and counting w/o a single coaster) and they can be had for just as cheap as Memorex.

Can't speak for Blu-ray, though.

that's good to hear about TDKs. Perhaps they're made by one of the better companies. I have a hard time trusting anything else other than JVC/Taiyo Yuden pro-line though.

I don't think it has riplock. Mine rips pretty fast, way faster than my older Liteon (at least concerning blu-ray. I haven't tried ripping a DVD yet.)
