LG G2 completely dead

Phone went completely dead Friday after I text my wife while I was out shopping. I placed it in my pocket and checked my phone about 10 mins later and got no lights, no screen response, nada. I left the phone on charge and went camping and last night messed around with it again for a little bit. Plugged in, I tried to reset by pressing power +vol. down and I was able to get the LG logo, but the phone shutdown. Waited about an hour, tried again, I got as far as the ATT logo & jingle and my LED light lit up, but then it died again. Is this indicative of a bad battery or something else? The battery looks like it's a PITA to replace so I'm thinking of just getting one of those cheap Nokia 520 phones at Microsoft till my contract expires in a month.

Edit: Phone was rooted but running stock/twrp. I can't get into recovery either.

You didn't have a pending update did you? If that tried to install with a non stock recovery it messes it up.

Anyways, I would try going into download mode and flash the stock ROM.

You try letting it boot while on the charger? That should tell you if its just a battery issue. The back is pretty easy to pop off if you need to change the battery. If you haven't already, post on XDA. You'll get far more useful info there.

I did have a pending update, but I had updates disabled with Titanium Backup. At any rate, I can't even get into download mode.

@ Midwayman - yea I tried letting it boot while on the charger. I get no indication that it's charging though. Usually I'll get a red light showing charging, green when it's done, and it's one of those faster chargers that takes like 3 hours to charge completely. Got a post on xda already, no response yet.

FWIW USB ports dying are a pretty common thing. Not sure on the g2, but often its on a small daughterboard that can be replaced. When you plug into a PC do you get any recognition that you plugged in a device?

No I tried my desktop, laptop and my work pc trying to get something to kick on but nothing has worked. I'm thinking it has to be a battery issue and it's completely dead. But I'm not 100% sure that's the problem because why would it boot to the LG splash screen first, shutdown, then next time, boot to LG splash screen, ATT splash screen and jingle then stop. Now I can't even get to the LG splash at all again. And this is only when I try hard reset. I can't get into recovery.

Can you see it on ADB at all? I had a problem with my G2 that sounds very similar to your problem and I had to go through a lot of crap to fix it. Basically, TWRP messed up some partitions on my phone (found out later it's a common problem with TWRP and the G2) and my phone tried to install an update. I couldn't get into recovery, couldn't get into download mode and I thought the phone was totally gone. I ended up reflashing eash partition manually with fastboot until download mode worked, then I used the LG flash tool to flash everything stock. if you can get it to the point where fastboot works I'll see if I can find where I had those partitions, but you may be right and it could be a hardware failure, it's hard to tell.

I don't remember seeing it on ADB but I doubt it as I don't see anything when I plug it in, nor do I seem to have any juice at all. I can't decide if I should just get a cheap phone for now or order a new battery and repair kit. Both will cost about $30.

Let us know if you decide to go fixing route. I saw dead phones in the past and have been curious how to go about fixing them.

Yeah I'm not sure I'd want to put the effort into it either if I was going to upgrade in a month, but if you get it working you could probably still sell it for 100$ or so.

I ordered the battery and a repair kit. I found a really good youtube tutorial on how to swap the batteries. It's tedious, the video is 10 mins long so it'll prob be pretty tricky. If that doesn't work, I'll just get the Nokia for now until it's time to upgrade.

Sorry to threadjack, but does anyone with a VS980 G2 know how to get the daily update reminder to go away for good? It's very annoying. My G2 is rooted and uses TWRP but is otherwise stock on 4.4.2.

If you have Titanium Backup you can disable it, but I don't remember where in the settings it actually is.

Curious to see if the battery does anything. If its a hardware issue, I'd be betting on the USB port. The behavior otherwise seems very like a flat battery. No USB, no charging. Flat battery, and no recognition when tethered to a PC.

When I've had fucked firmware before I was still able to charge at least. Get a bootloop, etc of course, but physically it seems okay.

I watched the video last night and broke down the phone. I was able to pull the battery, plug it back in and connect everything up. I decided to see if that helped so I powered it on. I got the LG screen to appear for about 10 seconds but nothing else happened. It just died again. So I opened the phone up again and saw that I could actually unplug the battery from the unit without taking the whole thing apart so I unplugged it and waited a few mins and plugged it back. Got the LG screen for about 5 seconds and that was it. It seems like it's a dying battery and I hope it is. But I ordered the Nokia anyways lol. Should be getting the battery in few days so I'll keep this thread updated.

LMK if you want me to take a look at it. I've been wanting to tinker with an LG.

Update: Battery didn't work. My Nokia Lumia 520 came in so I've been fooling around with that. Gotta say, I live how the Windows Phone flows. I'm a bit disappointed in the app store, but it's a refreshing change from Android.

only reason I can't give up on the lg g2 is the double tap to wake feature. Is there a smaller phone where this feature works reliably.

Already tried that button combo and plugging into pc. It's not be recognized, no power going to it, just dead. It sucks. I can double tap my nokia to bring up the lock screen vs. pressing the power button. I love the double tap.
